It is a chunky rib, which means it holds its shape and gives the polo neck some structure at the collar rather than collapsing around the neck. The colour is dark charcoal, so it sits easily with navy, grey and black. The model code is NPG-485JB, and N.Peal sells it within its 007 Die Another Day cashmere collection.
N.Peal describes its version as having a design very close to the original sweater. We have not seen the two side by side, so we describe it as a recreation, not as a copy.
Wearing it now
A chunky polo neck is the sweater to reach for when a shirt and tie would be too much and a crew neck too little. Wear it under a navy or grey overcoat, with dark flannels, and plain leather boots. In an office that does not ask for a tie, it replaces the shirt, jacket and tie in one move.
Blended cashmere takes more care than wool. Fold it rather than hanging it, wash it on a cold wool programme or by hand, and let it dry flat. We would choose the dark charcoal over any lighter colour for the same reason Bond did: it hides the day.
