A commando sweater is a working garment, and N.Peal has made one worth keeping. The N.Peal 007 Ribbed Army Sweater is deep navy, ribbed, patched at the shoulders and elbows, and cut from Merino and cashmere rather than army-surplus wool. Daniel Craig’s Bond wears it in No Time To Die, and in our view it is the most useful piece of the film’s commando outfit.
In the film
According to N.Peal, Bond wears the sweater in the final act of No Time To Die (2021), as he returns to Safin’s island. It is the centrepiece of the commando outfit seen on the character poster and in the trailer, worn with N.Peal’s 007 Combat Trousers and Danner boots. N.Peal developed it with the film’s costume designer, Suttirat Anne Larlarb. Our No Time To Die page has more on the film.
The details of the N.Peal 007 Ribbed Army Sweater
Merino and cashmere. The yarn is 90% superfine Merino wool and 10% cashmere. The Merino gives it the body a military sweater needs; the cashmere takes the edge off against the skin. It is a soft sweater with a hard-wearing outline.
Canvas patches. There are patches on the shoulders, elbows and cuffs. On a field sweater they protect the wear points. Here they do something quieter: they break up the ribbed knit and give the arms a defined line.
A drawcord neck. The wide neckline closes with a drawcord finished in metal trims. Pulled tight it closes the neck; left loose it sits open and relaxed.
Ribbed knit, deep navy. The ribbing gives the surface texture without pattern, and the navy is dark enough to pass for plain knitwear at a distance. We think it is the colour, rather than the patches, that keeps it wearable.
Wearing it now
This is a sweater that can look like fancy dress if you let it. Our advice is to wear it without the rest of the outfit. Skip the combat trousers and boots and put it with grey flannel or moleskin trousers, dark denim, or olive chinos, then add brown leather boots or plain suede shoes. It suits a long autumn walk, a flight, a country pub or a weekend away, and it will sit comfortably under a waxed or field jacket.
It also belongs to a longer line: N.Peal first dressed Bond in knitwear for Skyfall (2012), and this is the more rugged descendant. We would wear it as a casual layer rather than a smart one, and leave the cord loose.
Sizing and care. Check N.Peal’s sizing on the product page before you order. Treat it as fine knitwear: fold it rather than hang it, and follow the care guidance N.Peal provides with the garment. The US site ships to the United States only; N.Peal runs separate UK and EU sites for other buyers.
Less costly routes. Plain wool commando sweaters are widely sold and can give a look in the spirit of this one, though not in this blend of yarn and not with the same cut. If you want this sweater itself, N.Peal’s own page is the place to start.
