The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Omega Constellation Quartz 27mm 123.10.27.60.05.001 (Spectre)

A 27mm stainless steel quartz Constellation with a white mother-of-pearl dial and an engraved Roman numeral bezel. Léa Seydoux’s Madeleine Swann wears it in Spectre, in her first scene with Daniel Craig’s Bond at the Hoffler Klinik: a quiet, well-made watch with none of the usual film-watch noise.

Daniel Craig’s Bond takes most of the attention in Spectre, but one of the more considered watches in the film is on someone else’s wrist. The Omega Constellation Quartz 27mm is small, brushed and pale, with a mother-of-pearl dial that changes with the light. It is, in our view, the right kind of Bond watch for someone who would rather not be seen wearing one.

It is also a useful corrective. Not every watch in Bond’s world is a dive watch, and not every one is worn by a man. This one belongs to Spectre, and to Madeleine Swann.

In the film

Léa Seydoux’s Madeleine Swann wears it in Spectre (2015), in the scene of her first meeting with Bond at the Hoffler Klinik. Our catalogue identifies the model as the 27mm quartz, reference 123.10.27.60.05.001. The identification rests on collector and catalogue research rather than on a maker’s announcement, so we describe it as the identified model.

The details of the Omega Constellation Quartz 27mm

Brushed stainless steel. The case and bracelet share a brushed finish, so the watch catches light softly and shows daily wear gently. The case is 27mm across and 9mm thick, a proportion that sits close to the wrist and slides under a cuff.

A mother-of-pearl dial. The dial is white mother-of-pearl with index hour markers. Mother-of-pearl is never one flat colour: it reads cream, silver or faintly pink depending on the room, which gives a plain dial real depth.

Engraved Roman numerals. The fixed bezel carries engraved Roman numerals. They are the one decorative gesture on an otherwise restrained watch, and they give it a formal, slightly old-fashioned character that has not dated.

Sapphire crystal. The crystal is sapphire, which resists scratching far better than mineral glass, and the retailer listing we checked describes it as anti-reflective. On a pale dial that matters: you read the watch, not the glare.

Calibre 1376. Inside is Omega’s Calibre 1376, a quartz movement with a rhodium-plated finish. There is nothing to wind and nothing to set each morning. The caseback is solid, and the bracelet closes with a push-button folding clasp.

Wearing it now

This is a watch for a life with a lot going on and no wish to announce it. Brushed steel and pale pearl work with almost everything: tailoring, knitwear, a white shirt, a linen jacket in summer. Nothing about it needs to be matched.

Who it suits. At 27mm it is a small watch, deliberately so. We think of it first as a gift, or as a quiet piece for someone who prefers a fine, small dial to a large one. Try it on before you buy if you can, as a case this size wears differently from a modern 36mm or 40mm.

Quartz, by choice. A quartz movement suits a watch like this. It keeps good time, it is ready whenever you pick it up, and it asks for nothing between battery changes. We would choose it over a mechanical alternative for exactly that reason.

Availability. Omega’s own site lists the watch. At least one US dealer shows it as no longer available, so check stock and the current price with Omega before you commit. If you buy pre-owned, ask for the box, papers and reference number.

Questions

Is this the exact watch Madeleine Swann wears in Spectre?

Our catalogue identifies it as the same model: the 27mm Constellation Quartz, reference 123.10.27.60.05.001, worn by Léa Seydoux’s character at the Hoffler Klinik. The identification comes from collector and catalogue research rather than a maker’s press release.

Is the Omega Constellation Quartz 27mm still available?

Omega lists it on its own site, but at least one US dealer shows it as no longer available. Check stock with Omega or an authorised retailer before you plan around it, and consider a well-documented pre-owned example.

Is it quartz or automatic?

Quartz. It runs on Omega’s Calibre 1376, so it needs no winding and keeps time without attention between battery changes.

How big is it?

The case is 27mm across and 9mm thick, on a brushed stainless steel bracelet. It is a small watch by modern standards, so try it on first if you can.
