Penfold Heart golf balls turn up twice in Fleming’s Goldfinger, and again when the film puts Sean Connery’s Bond on the course against Goldfinger. Penfold still sells a Heart ball, and it is the easiest piece of Bond’s world to put in a golf bag.
In the books
In the Goldfinger novel, Bond plays a Penfold Heart. Catalogue notes record that Sean Connery’s Bond uses one in the film as well, in the match against Goldfinger. Penfold’s own page says Bond identified the ball in the scene.
Using it now
Penfold’s current Heart is a three-piece urethane ball with a 350-dimple design and 85 compression, which it describes as giving a softer feel, a high launch and good short-game spin. That is a different ball from the older Heart that MyGolfSpy described as an ionomer-covered distance ball at US$27 a dozen. Penfold lists it at US$40 and, at the time of writing, as sold out, so stock comes and goes. We would watch the page rather than pay a reseller’s mark-up.
