The smallest gadget in Skyfall is also the one that does the most work in a crowded room. The Phonak Invisity Flex is a miniature in-ear radio receiver, about 1.5g, that sits inside the ear canal, and it is the earpiece Daniel Craig’s Bond wears at the Macau casino. This is the Phonak Invisity Flex earpiece.
In the film
In Skyfall (2012), Bond wears the earpiece in his right ear in the casino in Macau to talk to Eve, and then drops it into her champagne glass. The same model was used by the film crew to relay lines to Javier Bardem during the glass-chamber scenes, though it is not seen on screen in those.
The details
Listens only. The Invisity is a receiver, not a two-way radio. It picks up a signal and plays it into the ear, which is why it suits presenters and performers who need cues.
1.5g. Wisycom, an Italian distributor, says it weighs 1.5g and is completely wireless.
One channel, programmable. The Flex is a single-channel unit programmed within a 7MHz band, set through an optional programming unit or by a Phonak dealer. A four-channel version with a remote control also exists.
Owning it now
The Flex has been discontinued, and Wisycom lists it in its discontinued range. Used examples were reported at around US$1,200 and Phonak’s newer Roger earpiece is sold as a related product by Gotham Sound. It is out of production and found second-hand; the button below runs a search of eBay for it. It is a specialist broadcast tool, and not something to wear to a dinner.
