Not everything in the world of Daniel Craig’s Bond is a weapon or a watch. In No Time To Die, a pair of silver Pioneer DJ HDJ-X10-S headphones lies on Q’s desk beside a DJ controller, a small piece of professional audio kit in a working space. It is an easy detail to miss and an easy one to live with. The Pioneer DJ HDJ-X10-S headphones are the flagship of the maker’s HDJ-X range, made for monitoring closely and wearing for long stretches.
In the film
Ben Whishaw’s Q has a pair of the silver HDJ-X10-S lying near the DJ controller on his computer desk in No Time To Die. They are part of the room rather than the plot, and we like them for it. They are the same model, in the same silver, that Pioneer DJ sells today. More from the film is gathered on our No Time To Die page.
The details of the Pioneer DJ HDJ-X10-S headphones
A 50mm driver. Pioneer DJ quotes a frequency range of 5Hz to 40kHz. For the listener that means clear left and right channel separation, with rich bass tones that stay apart from crisp mids and highs. A bass reflex chamber supports the low end.
Built for the road. Metal is used in the moving parts, and the headphones have cleared the US Military Standard shock test, according to the maker. Headphones made to survive a tour will cope with a briefcase.
Pads that wipe clean. The ear pads and headband cushion are polyurethane leather with a nano coating, which Pioneer DJ describes as a world first for DJ headphones. The coating resists deterioration, and sweat and dirt wipe off.
Comfort over long sessions. The housings are shaped to reduce pressure on the head, with a textured outer surface for grip, a flexible headband and a swivel that lets you wear them in more than one way.
Cables you can replace. Two detachable cables are supplied, a 1.2m coiled one and a 1.6m straight one, with an L-type mini-jack that guards against accidental disconnection. Cables and ear pads can be bought separately as replacements, so a worn part need not mean a new pair.
A flat case. The carry case is designed to slip into a travel bag and has room for USB devices and SD cards. A two-year warranty comes with them.
Wearing them now
These are closed-back, wired headphones, and we would use them accordingly: at a desk, in a studio corner, or on a long journey where you want a proper seal and a proper sound. They suit a man who cares about what he hears, whether that is a record collection, a mix he is making or a late call he needs to follow clearly.
Silver or black? Pioneer DJ sells the range in both colours. We would choose the silver. It is the pair from the film, and against a dark desk or a pale wall it looks considered rather than stagey. Black is the safer choice if you want them to disappear.
Who they are for. You do not need to DJ. Anyone who wants a robust pair with replaceable parts and a clean, wide sound has reason to look. If you want wireless convenience, look elsewhere: these come with cables.
