The details of the Rouje Gabin dress
The wrap. The Gabin is a midi-length wrap dress with a V neckline, five buttons down the front and a tie at the front. The tie lets you set the fit yourself, which is why one dress suits a good many shapes.
Short sleeves. They keep the dress a daytime one. It reads as a dress for walking, with a jacket over it if the evening cools.
100% viscose. The fabric drapes rather than holds a shape, so the skirt moves as you walk. It also creases. Rouje’s care advice for the current Gabin in Celestin Rouge is a 30°C wash, no tumble dry and a medium iron. It adds that viscose can shrink temporarily in the wash and returns to size once ironed.
The print. A red floral, which on screen means colour without fuss. It is a summer print that does not shout, and it sits easily in an old Italian town.
Wearing it now
This is the Bond-world dress for a woman who does not want to look dressed for a film. We would keep everything else plain: flat leather sandals or white espadrilles as in the film, a small bag, no heavy jewellery. For an evening that turns cool, a linen or lightweight cotton jacket in navy or cream sits better with the red than anything black.
Occasions. Lunch outdoors, a long weekend in a southern town, a late afternoon walk. It is a holiday dress that travels well, and it dresses up enough for dinner with a change of shoes.
Which version. The Jonquilles Rouge print appears to be out of production: we could not find it on Rouje’s current Gabin pages, and Rouje rotates the prints. The film version is therefore found second-hand, and our button runs an eBay search for it. Check the print name and the measurements carefully before you buy. If you only want the shape, any current Gabin gives you the cut, and at the time of writing the red options we found are Celestin Rouge, Floral Garden Rouge and an Arlesienne floral in red.
Fit. Rouje advises that the current Gabin in Celestin Rouge fits true to size, so take your usual size. Rouje cuts it in sizes 34 to 44.
