In late 2006 Sony dressed its pocket-sized Cyber-shot DSC-T50 in black and added a 007 logo, timed to the release of Casino Royale. The Sony DSC-T50B 007 Edition is, in every respect that matters to a photographer, the standard T50 in a more dramatic finish.
In the film
Vesper Lynd uses a Cyber-shot of the same type when she and Daniel Craig’s Bond sail into Venice on the yacht. Nothing we found shows the black 007 Edition on screen, so we treat it as a companion piece rather than the screen camera. The film is on our Casino Royale page.
The details
Same camera underneath. A contemporary report found the 007 Edition identical to the T50 apart from the finish: a 7.2-megapixel sensor, a 3-inch touch-screen LCD and a 3x optical zoom.
Stabilised. Optical Super SteadyShot image stabilisation was part of the T50 specification.
A sealed set. In the United States Sony also bundled the DSC-T50B with a 007 Edition VAIO TX ultraportable and matching attaché case, listed at US$4,299.99 in October 2006.
Owning it now
Sony no longer sells it. What turns up now is used stock, and a camera of this age is a collector’s item rather than a daily tool; our button runs an eBay search for the 007 Edition. If it is the look you want, a plain black compact in the same spirit is an easier route.
