The Sony Ericsson M600i from Casino Royale is a small detail of the film, but a real one. It is the white phone Vesper Lynd uses: a plain, wide, matte-plastic slab with a touchscreen above and a tidy grid of keys below, and an interesting object in its own right.
In the film
Vesper Lynd, played by Eva Green, uses a white M600i in Casino Royale (2006). The Mobile Phone Museum records that Daniel Craig’s Bond looks at the phone after she is killed. The phone on screen is the Crystal White model, one of the two colours Sony Ericsson sold, the other being Granite Black.
The details of the Sony Ericsson M600i
A keypad that does more with less. Fifteen of the keys are rockers, pressed left or right, so a full QWERTY layout fits on a pad that stays tidy. A second layer of functions sits behind the Alt key. It is an odd system, and an engaging one.
Touchscreen and stylus. The 2.6-inch display is resistive, 240 x 320 pixels, and works with a fingertip or the stylus that stows in a slot at the corner of the body. Handwriting recognition is built in. The jog wheel sits on the left edge rather than the right.
Symbian, not an app store. It runs Symbian 9.1 with the UIQ 3.0 interface, and a document viewer handles Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files. It has Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0 and an infrared port, and it can run Java games.
No camera. There isn’t one, and the rear panel is blank apart from a small logo and an accent mark. In 2006 that was a limitation. Today it reads as restraint.
Size. Wide and flat at 105 x 54 x 15mm, and 112g. It is a proper handful, closer to a small notebook than a modern slab.
Owning it now
This is an object for a collection, not a daily phone, and it is best treated that way. We would choose the Crystal White version, since it is the one from the film, and it looks well on a leather desk tray or a bookshelf beside the other things you keep because they are well made. It pairs naturally with a quiet, pale-wood room.
Will it work? Its radios are GSM 900, 1800 and 1900 plus UMTS 2100, with no 850 band, so it was built for European networks. Before you think of putting a SIM in it, check which of those bands your operator still carries.
Buying pre-owned. It is out of production, so a second-hand example is the only way to own one, and the button on this page runs a search for it on eBay. Look for a clean screen, a working jog wheel, a sound battery cover and the original BST-33 battery, and ask for photographs of the keypad. We quote no price here: condition and completeness vary too much for one to mean anything.
