The phone in the Aston Martin DB10 is a Sony Xperia Z5. Daniel Craig’s Bond uses it in Spectre to call Moneypenny while Hinx is on his tail through Rome, and it is on screen only briefly. Sony did not miss it: the Sony Xperia Z5 Spectre tie-in became a Made for Bond edition, and this page covers both the phone and the edition.
In the film
Bond uses the Z5 in Spectre (2015), when he rings Moneypenny from the DB10 during the Rome chase. The phone also appears in Sony’s Made for Bond commercial. We have not confirmed that the special edition is the handset seen on screen, so we describe it as the edition sold in the film’s name, not as the film prop.
The details of the Sony Xperia Z5 Spectre phone
Glass and aluminium. The Z5 has a glass front, a glass back and an aluminium frame, at 146 x 72 x 7.3mm and 154g. It is a slim, flat-edged object that sits easily in a jacket pocket and does not announce itself.
Water and dust resistance. Sony rates it IP65 and IP68. GSMArena lists immersion to 1.5m for 30 minutes. A phone that survives a wet pocket suits a man who is rarely at a desk.
A serious camera for 2015. The main camera is a 23MP Sony Exmor RS sensor with hybrid autofocus and 4K video. The sensor is Sony’s own, which is part of the point of buying a Sony.
The screen and the engine. A 5.2in full HD display (1920 x 1080), a Snapdragon 810 processor and 3GB of RAM. It launched with Android 5.1.1. There is a 3.5mm headphone socket and support for high-resolution audio.
The Made for Bond edition. Vodafone, the exclusive UK retailer from 5 October 2015, described Spectre themes, screensavers and an exclusive Moneypenny vlog, all downloadable through Xperia Lounge. We have not confirmed that any of that content is still available.
Owning it now
Be clear about what this is. It is a phone more than a decade old that Sony no longer makes, and the last Android version listed for it is 7.1.1. We would not ask it to be your daily phone. We would keep it as a piece of Bond history: a handset from the Craig era, carried briefly on screen.
Which one to look for. If you want the story, the Made for Bond edition is the version to find. If you only want the phone, any Z5 in good order will do, and Graphite Black is the colour we would choose: it is the least conspicuous of the four Sony lists (Graphite Black, White, Gold, Green).
Where it fits. On a desk beside a good notebook, or as a second phone for travel with a local SIM. It takes a nano-SIM and a microSD card of up to 200GB, so it can still serve as a music player. Note that the fingerprint sensor was fitted to the EU model only, per GSMArena.
Buying. Because it is discontinued, expect to find it second-hand; the button on this page runs an eBay search for the Made for Bond edition. Check the condition of the battery, as it is non-removable, and ask for photographs of the handset and its packaging if you want the Made for Bond edition.

Questions
Does Bond use a Sony Xperia Z5 in Spectre?
Yes. Daniel Craig’s Bond uses a Sony Xperia Z5 in Spectre, notably to call Moneypenny from the Aston Martin DB10 during the chase through Rome.
Is the Made for Bond edition the phone seen in the film?
We cannot confirm it. The Z5 model is verified on screen, but the special edition is documented in Sony’s Made for Bond commercial and the Vodafone UK launch, not as the prop in the film.
What came with the Sony Xperia Z5 Made for Bond edition?
Vodafone described Spectre themes, screensavers and an exclusive Moneypenny vlog, all downloadable through Xperia Lounge. We have not confirmed whether those downloads still work.
Is the Xperia Z5 waterproof?
It is water resistant rather than waterproof. Sony rates it IP65 and IP68, and GSMArena lists immersion to 1.5m for 30 minutes. After more than a decade, the seals may not be what they were.
More Spectre pieces are on the film page, with other gadgets and electronics, and everything Daniel Craig’s Bond carried.
