Bond’s cufflinks are rarely the point of a scene, which is why the S.T. Dupont 5174 cufflinks are worth knowing. They are square, in palladium, with a pattern of curved lines across the face: a shape distinctive enough to notice and restrained enough never to shout. They are worn by Daniel Craig’s Bond, and they are now more a matter of careful sourcing than of a quick order.
In the film
The pair is seen first in Casino Royale (2006), when Bond meets Vesper on the high-speed train to Montenegro. You get a clear look at them as he pours the wine. Our catalogue also lists them in Quantum of Solace (2008), but we have not been able to confirm the scene, so we would treat the Casino Royale sighting as the reliable one.
The details of the S.T. Dupont 5174 cufflinks
Palladium. The finish is a pale, cool white metal that sits comfortably against steel watches and silver-toned accessories. It does not read as gold or as bright chrome.
Curved lines on a square face. The pattern gives the front some movement without adding colour or lettering. It is a considered shape rather than a decorated one.
Three finishes. The design was also made in gold and in black, so a pair that is not palladium is still the same model.
The clasp varies. Newer versions of the 5174 use a slightly different closing clasp from the 2006 pair seen on screen. The top, the part that shows, is the same. Check which clasp a pair has before you buy.
A little larger than the 5172. One owner’s account describes the 5174 as slightly larger than S.T. Dupont’s Diamond Head 5172, which appears in both Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. It is worth holding the two side by side if you can.
Wearing it now
This is a formal pair that does not look dressed up. Wear them with a double cuff in white or pale blue, or a fine stripe, under a navy or charcoal suit. They suit a plain steel watch better than a gold one, and they sit comfortably with an evening suit too. We would keep the rest of the cuff simple and let the pattern carry the detail.
Finding a pair. The 5174 appears to be discontinued. Bond Lifestyle has noted that pen shops and cigar stores may still have them, so those and the second-hand market are the places to look, and our button runs an eBay search for them. Ask for clear photographs of the clasp and the back, and ask about condition. A pair that is a little worn is no fault in a cufflink.
In the spirit of. If the exact model proves elusive, S.T. Dupont’s current cufflink range includes Diamond Head designs, among them a round pair in black and palladium, which are a less direct route to the same look.
