The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Sulka Silk Tie (GoldenEye)

Sulka made the dress shirts Pierce Brosnan’s Bond wears in GoldenEye, and Sulka ties are paired with the Brioni suits in the Brosnan films. No single named tie is confirmed, so this page is about the house and how to wear its ties now.

Sulka is the house behind the shirts and ties in the Brosnan films, and the Sulka tie is a good place to start with the look. Pierce Brosnan’s Bond wears Brioni suits in GoldenEye, and the Sulka silk tie is the finishing piece that sits against them.

In the film

Reference sites record that the dress shirts in GoldenEye (1995) were made by Sulka, and a Tumblr post pairs a Brioni suit with a Sulka tie and shirt on Brosnan in the film. Our catalogue says Sulka ties are worn with Brioni suits throughout the Brosnan films. We have not found a single named tie or scene, so we do not point you to one pattern.

The details

The house. A. Sulka & Co. was founded in New York in 1893 by Amos Sulka and the tailor Leon Wormser, first as a shirtmaker, and had moved to Fifth Avenue by the early 1920s, with a shop in London’s Old Bond Street. Another site describes Sulka as long linked to the Bond films, from Dr. No to GoldenEye.

What to look for. A vintage Sulka silk tie is typically printed or woven silk. One French example is listed as made in France, 100% silk and 9cm wide at its widest point.

Wearing it now

Choose a tie that disappears into the suit: a navy or burgundy silk in a small repeat or a grenadine weave, 8 to 9cm wide, knotted simply. Wear it with a navy or charcoal suit and a pale shirt, as Brosnan’s Bond does. A good tie of this kind is one of the cheaper ways into the look; the point of Sulka is the cloth, not the logo.

Sulka ties are found second-hand: eBay shows more than 400 Sulka ties, in every colour and width. Check the width against your lapels, because ties from different decades vary, and inspect the lining for wear. For a current alternative, the Alexander Olch Avery Necktie 007 is on the site; it is an alternative from a later film, not a Sulka.
