The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Sunspel Riviera Polo Shirt Navy (Casino Royale)

The Sunspel Riviera polo shirt in navy: a slim, lightweight Supima cotton mesh polo that Sunspel adapted for Daniel Craig’s Bond in Casino Royale. It is among the quietest pieces of menswear in the film, and one of the easiest to wear well today.

Not every outfit needs a dinner jacket. In Casino Royale, Daniel Craig’s Bond wears a navy polo that is plain and close-fitting. The Sunspel Riviera polo shirt is the style Sunspel adapted for his first appearance as Bond, and in navy it is, in our view, the right one to start with. It asks little of the man wearing it, which is why it still works.

In the film

Bond wears a navy Sunspel polo in Casino Royale (2006). Sunspel says costume designer Lindy Hemming asked the company to design a polo for Craig’s first appearance as Bond, and it adapted its Riviera style, a design that dates from the 1950s. The shirt is still in the collection today. See the rest of the Casino Royale wardrobe.

The details of the Sunspel Riviera polo shirt

A mesh made for warm weather. Sunspel developed the lightweight cotton mesh in the 1950s for warm days on the French Riviera. It is breathable and comfortable, which is why it sits easily in summer.

Supima cotton. The shirt is 100% Supima, an extra-long staple cotton that Sunspel cites for durability and comfort. Sunspel says it is fully traceable and sustainably sourced from California.

A slim cut. The fit is close at the chest, waist and sleeves, which gives a trim line. Sunspel suggests sizing up for a looser fit. If you want more room, it also makes a regular-fit Riviera polo (MPOL1076).

Made in Portugal. The mesh is developed in-house by Sunspel, and the polo is made in Portugal.

Wearing it now

Bond shows that a polo can do a good deal of work. We would wear this one wherever a T-shirt is too casual and a shirt too much: a long lunch, a weekend away, a warm evening on a terrace. Navy goes with almost everything. Stone or sand chinos, cream linen trousers and tan suede loafers all suit it, and so does an unstructured navy blazer over the top when the evening cools.

Which one to choose. Navy first. It is the colour Bond wears, and it is the easiest to build a wardrobe around. Sunspel also makes the Riviera polo in a wide run of colours, among them black and white, if a second one follows. Choose the slim fit if you are lean to average in build, and the regular fit if you like a little air around the body.

Sizing. Sunspel’s model is 6ft 3in with a 39in chest and wears a medium. Work from your chest measurement and the size chart rather than from your usual shirt size.

Care. Sunspel recommends a gentle wash at 30°C with similar colours and no tumble drying. The shirt can also be dry cleaned. More in this vein is in our Bond-inspired clothing.
