The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Sunspel Stretch Cotton Trunks (Spectre)

Sunspel’s everyday trunk in a lightweight stretch cotton, close-fitting and made in Portugal. Sunspel supplied its stretch trunks for Daniel Craig to wear in Spectre, though we have not confirmed them on screen; the reason to own them is the cut and the cloth, not the credit.

Most of what Daniel Craig’s Bond wears is meant to be seen. These are not. Sunspel supplied its stretch cotton trunks, along with its stretch briefs, for Craig to wear in Spectre, and they are the least conspicuous thing on this site. We include them because the Sunspel stretch cotton trunks are a quietly well-made piece of underwear, and because the principle behind them is Bond’s: get the layer nobody sees right.

In the film

Sunspel supplied stretch trunks and stretch briefs for Daniel Craig to wear in Spectre (2015). We have not found a scene in which they are visible, so we make no claim that they appear on screen. The model sold today is Sunspel’s current Stretch Cotton Trunk, the nearest match we can find to the low waist trunk it supplied then. Whether it is unchanged since 2015 we cannot confirm.

The details of the Sunspel stretch cotton trunks

92% cotton, 8% elastane. Sunspel describes the fabric as exceptionally lightweight and soft. The small amount of elastane lets the cloth move with you.

A neat, close fit. The cut is close, with an elasticated waist and no front opening. In a size medium the outside leg measures 23cm, which makes for a short leg.

Flat locked seams. Sunspel specifies them for added comfort, which matters in a close-fitting cut.

Made in Portugal. Sunspel was founded in 1860 and says it introduced the boxer short to Britain in 1947. Underwear is what the company was founded to make, and the design reflects that: plain, with little added.

Wearing it now

This is a drawer item, and the case for it is practical. We would wear a close, short-legged trunk under slim tailoring and chinos, where a longer leg can show or bunch, and under swim shorts. We would choose navy, black or white and ignore the novelty colours: the point is that no one knows.

Trunk or boxer brief? Sunspel also sells a longer-leg Stretch Cotton Boxer Brief in the same fabric. We would take the trunk for summer and for fitted trousers, and the longer cut if you like more coverage under a heavier cloth.

Care. Wash gently at 40°C. Sunspel says not to tumble dry and not to dry clean, so line-dry them.

For the clothes that go over them, see our clothing guide, and for the actor behind the role, Daniel Craig.

Questions

Did Bond wear Sunspel underwear in Spectre?

Not visibly, as far as we can confirm. Sunspel supplied stretch trunks and stretch briefs for Daniel Craig to wear in the film, but we have not found a finished scene in which either can be seen.

Are these the trunks supplied for Spectre?

They are the nearest current match we can find. Sunspel supplied a stretch cotton low waist trunk, and today’s Stretch Cotton Trunk is the closest model, though we cannot confirm it is unchanged.

How much do Sunspel stretch cotton trunks cost?

The RRP is US$50 a pair on Sunspel’s US site, at the time of writing, October 2026. Sunspel also sells a three-pack at US$90, which is a lower price per pair.

What is the difference between the trunk and the boxer brief?

The leg length. Both use the same stretch cotton, but the boxer brief has the longer leg and the trunk is the shorter, closer cut.
