M is a man who dresses for the room he commands, and the Timothy Everest double-breasted suit he wears in No Time To Die is cut to match. It is navy wool with a light blue rope stripe: authority without a raised voice. You cannot buy this particular suit, because it was made for the film, but you can commission one in the same spirit, and we think it is among the more useful things a man can have made.
In the film
Ralph Fiennes’s M wears bespoke tailoring by Timothy Everest in No Time To Die, and this double-breasted navy rope stripe suit appears on the character poster. The cloth is a 12 oz navy wool with a light blue rope stripe, from the Five Stars bunch by Draper’s Italy. Our No Time To Die page has the rest of the film’s wardrobe.
The details of the Timothy Everest double-breasted suit
A 12 oz cloth. That is a mid-weight wool, heavy enough to hang cleanly and light enough to be worn comfortably through most of a temperate year. It is not a winter suit, and not a summer one. It is the suit you reach for most often.
A pale stripe on navy. The stripe is light blue rather than white, so at conversation distance it reads as texture, and only up close as a stripe. It gives a navy suit a little life without making it a statement.
Double-breasted. The overlap of the front gives the jacket a stronger line through the chest and waist than a single-breasted cut, and it asks for more care in the fit. A double-breasted jacket is worn buttoned, so it has to be cut for the man inside it. That is where bespoke earns its fee.
Made by hand, for one man. Timothy Everest’s in-house tailoring team makes its bespoke suits fully by hand. What you are buying is the cut, the fittings and the proportion, not a name on the label.
Wearing it now
This is a suit for the man who has outgrown the idea of a work suit and a wedding suit as two separate things. In navy with a quiet stripe it does both, and it is at its best in rooms where the other men have not quite decided what to wear: board dinners, a lunch that runs into the afternoon, a first night at the theatre.
Keep everything else plain. A white or pale blue poplin shirt, a dark knitted tie, black oxfords or polished dark brown calf. A pocket square in white linen, folded flat. We would resist the temptation to add a waistcoat. The double-breasted jacket already does the work of one.
How to wear it. Button the jacket when you stand and undo it when you sit. Keep the trousers cut with a slightly fuller leg and a turn-up so the whole suit looks as though it was designed together.
Which version to choose. If you are commissioning, we would take the cloth description above to the cutter and ask to see it, or its nearest neighbour, before choosing anything bolder. Navy with a pale stripe is the right first double-breasted. If a full bespoke commission is more than you want to spend, the same cloth and proportions are worth taking to any good tailor; that would be a less costly route to the same look, not the suit from the film.
