The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Tom Ford Atticus Shawl Collar Cocktail Jacket (No Time To Die)

Tom Ford’s black wool Atticus cocktail jacket, with a quilted satin lapel and cuffs, is the dinner jacket Daniel Craig’s Bond wears in No Time To Die. We could not confirm it is still sold new, so the search runs second-hand. The shawl collar is the part to borrow.

The dinner jacket Daniel Craig’s Bond wears in No Time To Die is a quiet one. Tom Ford made it in black wool with a satin shawl collar and gauntlet cuffs, cut without any of the flash that black tie tends to invite. Tom Ford calls it the Atticus. We think the Tom Ford Atticus shawl collar jacket is the right dinner jacket for a man who wants one and means to keep it.

In the film

Craig’s Bond wears the black dinner suit in No Time To Die (2021), and it appears in the film’s promotional imagery too. In its press release for the film, Tom Ford named the jacket as the Black Wool Atticus Shawl Collar Cocktail Jacket with Quilted Satin Lapel and Cuffs. It is worn with Atticus evening trousers, a white poplin collared shirt, a black satin self bow tie and an off-white silk pocket square. The shawl collar and gauntlet cuffs recall the dinner jacket from Quantum of Solace (2008).

The details

The shawl collar. A single curve of black satin runs down from the nape, with no notch and no peak. It reads as softer than a peak lapel and a little more private, which is the point.

Quilted satin trim. Tom Ford specifies a quilted satin lapel and cuffs. Against black wool, satin adds sheen without adding contrast, so the trim reads as texture rather than decoration.

Gauntlet cuffs. The sleeves end in satin gauntlet cuffs with five buttons, one of which is unbuttoned or missing. It is a small, deliberate irregularity on an otherwise exact garment.

Black, or nearly. Tom Ford describes the wool as black, yet on screen it can read as a deep midnight blue. Under evening light the distinction is slight.

Finding one

We have not been able to confirm a current Tom Ford listing under the Atticus name for this exact jacket, and the one we found on a stockist’s site was a different, sold-out colourway. Treat it as out of production and found second-hand. The button on this page runs a search on eBay. Check the cut, the size and the condition of the satin before you buy, as pre-owned evening wear varies a great deal.

Wearing it now

In our view a shawl collar is the easiest dinner jacket to wear well. It sits comfortably with a bow tie and looks as right at a private dinner as at a black-tie dance. We would keep everything else plain: white shirt, black satin bow tie, matching trousers, black oxfords, a folded silk handkerchief and no more. Let the collar be the one note of sheen.

Occasions. Black-tie weddings, charity dinners, the opera, a New Year’s Eve that deserves it.

Making it yours. Do not copy the outfit piece by piece. Take the idea: a shawl collar, black wool, a plain white shirt. Then have the trousers hemmed to a clean break and the sleeves set so a quarter inch of cuff shows. Fit counts for more than the label.

In the same spirit

For a current route to the same evening, the catalogue also has the Brioni Tuxedo, a black-tie suit worn in another film. It is an alternative in the spirit of the Atticus jacket, not the jacket worn in No Time To Die. Pair either with the Tom Ford Atticus evening trousers if you want the maker’s own pairing.

Questions

Is this the jacket Bond wears in No Time To Die?

Yes, according to Tom Ford. Its press release for the film names the Black Wool Atticus Shawl Collar Cocktail Jacket with Quilted Satin Lapel and Cuffs as part of Bond’s outfit.

What did Bond wear with the Tom Ford tuxedo?

Tom Ford lists Atticus evening trousers, a white poplin collared shirt, a black satin self bow tie and an off-white silk pocket square. The shirt has turnback cuffs.

Is the Tom Ford Atticus jacket still for sale?

We could not confirm that it is sold new. It is best treated as out of production and found second-hand, though Tom Ford sells other shawl-collar dinner jackets.

Is a shawl collar or a peak lapel better for black tie?

Both are correct. A peak lapel is sharper and more structured, while a shawl collar is softer and, in our view, easier to wear well. If you intend to own only one dinner jacket, we would choose the shawl.
