A check suit is a quiet risk. Done badly it looks like costume; done well it looks like a man who knows his tailor. In No Time To Die, Daniel Craig’s Bond steps out in London in the second kind: a grey Prince of Wales check from Tom Ford’s O’Connor line, cut close, in a pattern that reads as plain grey until you are near enough to see it. The Tom Ford O’Connor Prince of Wales suit is, in our view, the most usable of Bond’s suits for a man who does not work in a film.
In the film
Bond wears it in London in No Time To Die (2021), walking from his Aston Martin V8 Vantage towards a government building. It is also visible in one of the first promotional images released for the film. Craig wore the same suit on 21 June 2019, when Prince Charles visited the Bond 25 set, and Tom Ford’s O’Connor cut had already dressed Bond in Spectre.
The details of the Tom Ford O’Connor Prince of Wales suit
The pattern. Prince of Wales check, also called glen check, is a woven pattern of small and larger checks. In grey it softens at a distance into a single tone, which is what keeps it from looking loud. It asks for a plain shirt and a plain tie, and rewards you for it.
The cut. The O’Connor is Tom Ford’s slimmer, more modern cut: a narrow shoulder, smaller lapels, a suppressed waist, fitted trousers and a double vent. It is not a generous suit. That is the point of it, and the reason fit matters more here than the label.
The jacket. Notch lapel, two flap pockets, and three buttons at the cuff with one extra buttonhole. It is a detail you notice only up close.
The cloth. Mr Porter lists the O’Connor in Prince of Wales check as a wool blend. We have no full composition to quote, so confirm it on the retailer’s page before you buy.
Wearing it now
This is a suit for working days that matter: a client lunch, a board meeting, a train to somewhere that expects a jacket. The check gives it more character than plain grey, without the formality of a stripe. Bond wears his with a sea island poplin shirt with turnback cuffs, a blue tie, an off-white silk pocket square and black Crockett & Jones Highbury shoes. We would copy that almost exactly, and leave the tie off at the weekend.
Splitting it. We would also wear the trousers on their own with a navy knit and suede shoes, and keep the jacket for a plain open-neck shirt. A check this quiet works as separates as readily as a suit, which makes it better value than it first looks.
Fit. The O’Connor is cut close, so try it on before you commit, and check the shoulder and sleeve length before anything else. A good tailor can move a hem or a waist, but not a shoulder.
The closest route. We have not found Tom Ford confirming the cloth used on screen. Treat the Tom Ford O’Connor Prince of Wales jacket at Mr Porter as the closest available route to the same look, not as the identical suit. That listing is for the jacket; the trousers are listed separately.
