The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Tom Ford Shelton Satin-Trimmed Wool and Mohair-Blend Tuxedo Jacket (No Time To Die)

A satin-trimmed wool and mohair dinner jacket from Tom Ford, cut in the Shelton model. It is the nearest off-the-rack relation to the tuxedo Daniel Craig’s Bond wears in No Time To Die, and a sound basis for a black-tie wardrobe.

Black tie leaves very little room for invention, which is why the small decisions matter. The Tom Ford Shelton tuxedo jacket is a wool and mohair-blend dinner jacket with satin trim, and it is the nearest ready-to-wear relation to the tuxedo Daniel Craig’s Bond wears in No Time To Die. We would not call it the film jacket. We would call it the right place to start.

In the film

Bond wears a black Tom Ford dinner suit in No Time To Die, with a shawl collar and satin gauntlet cuffs. Tom Ford refers to that jacket as the Black Wool Atticus Shawl Collar Cocktail Jacket, not the Shelton, so this is a jacket in the spirit of the film rather than the one from it. It closely resembles the midnight blue Tom Ford dinner jacket Bond wears in Quantum of Solace (2008), with the same gauntlet cuffs and shawl collar. See the wider film page for the rest of the wardrobe.

The details

Wool and mohair. The cloth is a wool and mohair blend, the same combination Tom Ford lists for its Shelton tuxedo. It is a sound choice for an evening jacket that will be worn sparingly.

Satin trim. Facings in satin catch the light where the cloth does not. That contrast is the whole point of a dinner jacket, and it is best kept quiet.

The Shelton cut. Mr Porter sells it as a slim fit. If you are between sizes, a tailor can do more with a jacket that is slightly generous than with one that is tight.

Wearing the Tom Ford Shelton tuxedo jacket now

Black tie is now a handful of evenings a year, so the jacket needs to be right rather than numerous. Midnight blue, which Mr Porter lists, is in our view the better choice if you will own only one. If you want the closer match to the film, look for black, bearing in mind that Tom Ford’s film jacket is the Atticus rather than the Shelton.

Keep everything around it plain: a white poplin dress shirt, a black silk bow tie, black patent or highly polished oxfords, and a watch with a restrained dial. A pocket square is optional. Cuffs should show about a centimetre of shirt.

Dressed down, the jacket has a second life: worn with dark, well-cut trousers and a black knit at a dinner that is not strictly black tie. We would not go further than that. For more on the actor, see Daniel Craig and our clothing collection.

Questions

Is this the tuxedo Bond wears in No Time To Die?

Not exactly. Tom Ford refers to the film jacket as the black Atticus. The Shelton is a close relation in cut and trim, which is why we describe it as in the spirit of the film.

Is the Tom Ford Shelton jacket black or midnight blue?

Mr Porter sells a midnight blue version. The film jacket is black, and Tom Ford calls it the Atticus.

What shirt does Bond wear with the tuxedo?

A white Tom Ford poplin collared shirt with turnback cuffs. Turnback cuffs also appear on the Tom Ford shirt he wears in the London scenes of the film.

What are the cuffs on the film jacket?

Black satin gauntlet cuffs with five buttons, one of which appears to be left undone. The Shelton has similar cuffs.
