The tie Bond wears at the start of Skyfall is easy to miss: a narrow tie in a small black and silver check, knotted under a white collar in Istanbul. This Tom Ford silver grey tie is the one many people mean when they ask what he wore, and it has a short and slightly complicated history, because Tom Ford has not sold it as a standard line.
In the film
Daniel Craig’s Bond wears a Tom Ford black and silver check tie in the Istanbul sequence at the start of Skyfall (2012), with a light grey sharkskin suit and a white shirt. See our Skyfall page for more of the Turkey outfit.
The details
A fine check. The pattern is subtle and not overstated. Up close you see the check; at a distance it reads as a quiet silver grey.
Narrow. A recent owner of one of the special-order copies found it slightly narrower than the standard Tom Ford ties seen in Spectre, which are themselves quite narrow. It ties well in a four-in-hand knot, and a larger knot would not suit it.
Labelled sideways. On the reverse of the special-order ties the Tom Ford label is stitched vertically rather than horizontally, as on the originals, and the tipping carries the Tom Ford logo, which the originals do not.
Finding one
The tie is out of production and was never in Tom Ford’s regular line. A fan project organised through the AJB007 community arranged a special order in 2018, with delivery in 2019 at about GBP 170 each. That order is closed, and copies now turn up second-hand, so the button on this page runs a search on eBay. Ask the seller for the width and photographs of the reverse before you buy.
Wearing it now
The idea is a slim silk tie, around 3 inches, in a fine black and silver or charcoal check. It goes with a light grey suit and white shirt, as in the film, and with navy as easily. Keep the knot small, the shirt crisp and the collar firm.
In the same spirit
For a current tie in the same register, the catalogue has the Alexander Olch Avery Necktie 007, a necktie linked to No Time To Die. It is an alternative in the spirit of the Skyfall tie, not the tie worn in this film; check the pattern against what you want before buying.

Not as a regular item. A fan-organised special order ran in 2018 and 2019, and any copies now are second-hand.
How wide is it?
Narrow: one resale listing gives about 3 inches, and an owner calls it slimmer than the ties in Spectre.
