The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Tommy Bahama Catalina Twill Long-Sleeve Silk Shirt (No Time To Die)

Tommy Bahama’s Catalina Twill is a 100% silk long-sleeve shirt with a spread collar, a single chest pocket and a hem cut to be worn out. Daniel Craig’s Bond wears a dark one in Jamaica and Cuba in No Time To Die, and it is the easiest piece of that wardrobe to wear now.

Most of Bond’s shirts are made for a tie. This one is made for a veranda. In the Jamaica sequences of No Time To Die, Daniel Craig’s Bond lives in a dark silk shirt with a chest pocket and a shortened hem, and it is the clearest picture the film gives of a man who has stopped performing. The Tommy Bahama Catalina Twill shirt is the piece identified as that shirt, and in our view it is the easiest part of the Jamaica wardrobe to put into a real life.

In the film

Bond wears a dark long-sleeve shirt through the Jamaica and Cuba sequences of No Time To Die (2021): around his house, behind the wheel of the Land Rover Series III, and on the yacht, where it comes unbuttoned as he changes into his tuxedo. In Cuba it sits under the Barbour jacket. Sources differ slightly on whether it is black or a very dark navy, so we describe it as dark and leave the colour to you.

The details of the Tommy Bahama Catalina Twill shirt

100% silk. Tommy Bahama describes the cloth as smooth, and reviewers call it light. It is comfortable in heat and does not cling, which is the whole case for silk in a warm climate.

Pickstitching. Fine stitching along the edges gives the plain cloth a little texture, enough to read as made rather than merely cut.

A straight hem and side vents. The hem is cut straight rather than curved and the sides are vented, so the shirt is built to be worn untucked without looking like an oversight.

A spread collar and one chest pocket. The spread collar suits being worn open, and the single patch pocket keeps the front uncluttered. The cuffs are mitered.

Easier to care for than silk sounds. Tommy Bahama says machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and tumble dry low, or dry clean. We would still wash it in a mesh bag and hang it to dry.

Wearing it now

This is a shirt for the long evening outdoors: dinner on a terrace, a drive with the windows down, a hotel bar in a warm city. Worn untucked with the top button open, it carries the same ease as Bond’s. It also sits happily with grey or faded indigo jeans, a pair of suede loafers or boat shoes, and a lightweight unlined jacket if the evening cools. The film pairs it with a Barbour jacket, which we think is the right instinct: a hard-wearing outer layer over soft silk is the point.

Which colour? Black or a deep navy if you want the film look. The shirt has also been sold in lighter colours, including a white called Coconut, and those are pleasant, but they are a different shirt in spirit.

Fit. It is sold as a men’s fit, and reviewers on Tommy Bahama’s own site tend to describe it as roomy, some saying it is boxy. If you sit between sizes, we would take the smaller. Try it before you commit if you can.

Availability. At the time of writing, Tommy Bahama’s US page lists it as out of stock, and it is sold by colour and size, so availability changes. Check the colour you want before you plan around it. For more in the same register, see our clothing guide and the full list of Bond films.

Questions

Is this the shirt Bond wears in No Time To Die?

It is the shirt identified by Bond wardrobe sources as the one worn in Jamaica and Cuba in No Time To Die. Sources differ on whether the colour is black or a very dark navy, so choose whichever dark shade is in stock.

Is the Catalina Twill shirt really silk?

Yes. Tommy Bahama lists it as 100% silk. It can be machine washed cold on a gentle cycle, tumble dried low, or dry cleaned.

Does it run large?

It tends to. Reviewers on Tommy Bahama’s site lean towards roomy, with some describing it as boxy. If you are between sizes, we would take the smaller.

Can I wear it tucked in?

You can, but it is cut to be worn out. The straight hem and side vents are made for it, and reviewers say it works better untucked.
