The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Austria

Austria offers Bond what Hollywood can’t build: snow, glass and a rack of mountain peaks. The Tyrolean Alps and the Salzkammergut lakes have stood in for private clinics, hidden cabins and a rather brisk car chase.
Sölden is the best base for winter visitors, while Altaussee rewards a quieter trip in summer. Both are a short drive from Innsbruck or Salzburg.

The Living Daylights

Wikipedia says the border chase was filmed in Carinthia including the town of Nassfeld on the Austrian-Italian border. Reelstreets argues, citing a local researcher, that the dam crest where Bond escapes the Iron Curtain stunt is on the small Lago del Pramollo reservoir just across the Italian border. The exact dam shot location is based on fan research.

Today
Nassfeld is a ski resort straddling the Austria-Italy border, in the Carnic Alps.
Visiting
Reached by road from the Gail Valley, it is accessible in summer and winter.

8Weißensee (frozen lake chase)

Carinthia, Austria

The Living Daylights

Wikipedia names Weißensee as a filming location for the snowbound escape from Czechoslovakia, which is the film’s border chase. Reelstreets locates the road approaching the lake on the B87 between Greifenburg and Weißbriach, with the frozen lake near the village of Naggl. The Aston Martin’s ice stunt and the snowcat sequence were filmed here.

Scenes

Today
Weißensee is a nature park and a winter sports area, famous for its natural ice skating rink.
Visiting
The lake is accessible by road in the Gail Valley of Carinthia. In winter the ice may be skated if conditions allow, but check local ice safety reports first.

The Living Daylights

Bond takes Kara for a ride on the Prater’s giant Ferris wheel, and later meets his ally Saunders in the fairground, where Saunders is killed. The fairground sequences were shot over about three evenings. Director John Glen had earlier worked as a sound editor on The Third Man, which also used the Riesenrad.

Scenes
Ferris wheel kiss, Saunders’ meeting and murder, fairground chase
Today
The Riesenrad (built 1896-97) is still Vienna’s best-known landmark in the Wurstelprater amusement park.
Visiting
Open to the public at the Praterstern (U1/U2), with ticketed rides. Opening hours vary by season.

The Living Daylights

Bond and Kara ride in a horse-drawn carriage past Schönbrunn’s grounds, with waltzing couples in the palace gardens, and attend a performance in the Palace Theatre in the west wing. Wikipedia records the film’s conclusion as shot at Schönbrunn. Reelstreets notes that carriage shots on Maria-Theresien-Platz and the Obeliskenallee were edited together from different parts of the city.

Today
Schönbrunn is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Vienna’s main attractions, with the Palace Theatre inside the complex.

The Living Daylights

The interior of the Bratislava concert hall, where Kara plays the cello, was shot in the Sofiensäle, a historic Vienna concert hall and recording venue. The film’s interior shots are valuable records because the building burned down in August 2001.

Scenes
Concert interval, Kara’s performance, backstage corridors
Today
The historic facade survives, but the interior was rebuilt around 2010 as apartments, an events venue, a bar and a hotel.
Visiting
The rebuilt complex is in the 3rd district. Only the facade is original, and access to events spaces depends on bookings.

12Vienna Gasometers (Koskov’s pipeline escape)

Simmering, Vienna

The Living Daylights

The brick gasometers on Guglgasse stood in for the end of the gas pipeline, where Koskov is spirited away, and a Harrier jet takes off from one of them. Bond and Saunders also cross a border checkpoint on a Vienna bridge nearby (identified by fans as the Steinsporn Bridge).

Scenes
Pipeline arrival, Koskov’s extraction, vertical-takeoff Harrier
Today
The four gasometers were converted around 1999-2001 into apartments, shops, a cinema and a concert venue, keeping their original brick shells.
Visiting
The Gasometer complex has its own U3 metro stop. Shops and the event hall are open to the public, and the brick exteriors can be seen freely.

The Living Daylights

The exterior of the concert hall from which General Koskov defects was shot at Vienna’s Volksoper on Währinger Strasse. Bond covers the sniper from a building opposite, at the corner of Währinger Strasse and Schlagergasse. Later street scenes nearby, including Kara’s apartment and the KGB’s arrest of her from a tram, were filmed in the Währing district (fan-sourced identification).

Scenes
Koskov’s defection, Bond’s counter-sniper stand, Kara followed onto the tram
Today
The Volksoper is still a working opera and operetta house. The surrounding streets are ordinary residential Vienna.
