The Macallan 18 Year Old is a small part of Spectre, and all the better for it. Daniel Craig’s Bond drinks it in his apartment, where the bottle sits on a table. Bond drank the same brand in Skyfall, which reads as a habit rather than a prop. More on the film is on the Spectre page.
Today it is sold as the Sherry Oak 18 Years Old: a limited annual release, matured for a minimum of 18 years in predominantly sherry-seasoned European oak casks from Jerez. The Macallan describes the colour as entirely natural and the character as ginger, dates and dark chocolate. Because the release changes each year, the bottle you buy will not necessarily match the one on screen. The age and the house are the same.
Drinking the Macallan 18 Year Old now
This is a whisky for the end of an evening, with company or without. We would pour it neat into a heavy tumbler at room temperature, then add a few drops of water only if it seems to ask for it. The maker suggests a Rob Roy; we would leave an 18-year-old well alone.
Store the bottle upright, somewhere cool and out of direct light. It also makes a considered gift: one bottle, one clear reason. More like it are in Food & Drink.
