The Saitek MegaGrip III MX-230 is not seen as a joystick in GoldenEye, but its base is the starting point for the limpet mine Pierce Brosnan’s Bond activates with red lights. Reference sites say the prop was made from the base of a Saitek MegaGrip, which is why collectors look for the Saitek MegaGrip III today.
Owning it now
The joystick is out of production, and it is found second-hand. It was designed for IBM PCs and compatibles, from the XT and AT through 386 and 486 machines, with a game-port connector typical of sound cards of the time, so it is a retro-computing object more than a modern controller. One listing is for the PC version in its box with a French price label of 150 francs; a UK listing was priced at £26.42 or best offer.
It was also sold as the PC Commander Plus SV-207A. We would buy it for the story: a joystick on a desk beside a film still is a fun reference, and it costs little. Expect to need an adapter to use it with a modern computer.
See the film page for more, including Pierce Brosnan’s Bond and the rest of his gadgets.
