In what appears to be an MI6 server room in No Time To Die, a black Anglepoise Type 75 sits on Q’s desk: an unshowy piece of British industrial design. The Anglepoise Type 75 desk lamp is Sir Kenneth Grange’s reworking of the modernist Apex 90, launched in the 1970s. Dozens more, in Jet Black and Brushed Aluminium, stand on the desks of MI6 in Skyfall, where Bill Tanner uses a brushed aluminium one to examine bullet fragments. Both films belong to Daniel Craig’s Bond, and the lamp is the sort of object the series gets right: functional first, handsome as a result. Using the Anglepoise Type 75 desk lamp now
We would choose the Jet Black, because a matt black lamp, like the one on Q’s desk, disappears into a room rather than announcing itself. The arms are aluminium, the fittings chrome plated, and the base is cast iron under an aluminium cover, so it stays put on a working desk.
