M’s new office in Quantum of Solace is an ultra-modern room, and the chair she sits in suits it. The Interstuhl Silver Chair 262S is a swivel chair in aluminium and semi-aniline leather, drawn by the architect Hadi Teherani and made in Germany. It is a good deal easier to live with than most film furniture: a proper working chair that happens to look as if it belongs in a better room.
In the film
Judi Dench’s M sits on a Silver Chair 262S in her new office in Quantum of Solace (2008). Interstuhl itself points to the range’s appearance beside Daniel Craig’s Bond in the film. We have not confirmed which leather and finish were used on set, so we describe the chair as Interstuhl sells it rather than as it was filmed.
The details of the Interstuhl Silver Chair 262S
A synchronous mechanism with weight regulation. The backrest tilts further than the seat, which opens the angle between torso and thighs as you lean back, and the resistance is set to your weight. It is what separates a chair for a desk from a chair for a day at one.
A medium-high back. The backrest is 56cm tall and the chair stands 108cm overall, enough to support the back without the bulk of a headrest. If you want more height, the Silver range also includes the high-backed 362S.
Leather and aluminium. The 262S has armrests and a five-star aluminium base. The German retailer pro office sells it in semi-aniline leather in black, pearl white, walnut, red-orange and olive, with metal parts in brushed silver or white. Interstuhl also shows fabrics for the range, including Remix and Steelcut Trio.
Castors chosen for the floor. You specify hard castors for carpet or soft castors for hard floors. It is a small decision that protects the floor you have.
A record behind it. Interstuhl lists Red Dot design awards for the Silver range, from 2003 and 2007, and a 10-year warranty. Check the terms with your dealer.
Using it now
This is a chair for a study, not a statement. It sits best with a plain desk in oak or steel, a good lamp and little else. We would choose the black leather with brushed silver metal: it is the quietest combination and will agree with whatever else is in the room. The olive is the one we would consider if the room already has dark wood.
Size. The footprint is 58cm wide by 72cm deep. The seat is 48cm wide and 48cm deep and adjusts from 41 to 51cm in height, so check it against your desk before ordering.
Buying. Pro office quotes about 25 working days for delivery, assembled in the box. Pre-owned examples turn up through vintage dealers; ask about the condition of the leather and the mechanism before you commit.

Questions
Is this the exact chair M sits on in Quantum of Solace?
It is the same model: the Silver Chair 262S. Our sources do not confirm the leather colour or metal finish used on set, so choose the combination you like best.
Who designed the Interstuhl Silver 262S?
Hadi Teherani, an architect and designer, designed the Silver range for Interstuhl. The 262S is its medium-high office swivel chair.
How much does the Interstuhl Silver 262S cost?
At the time of writing, October 2026, pro office lists it at €4,377.10 including VAT, with some variants from €3,367.00. The price depends on upholstery, finish and castors.
What is a synchronous mechanism on an office chair?
It moves the seat and backrest together but at different angles, so the backrest tilts further than the seat. That opens the body angle as you recline and suits long periods of sitting better than a simple tilt.
