A bow tie is the smallest decision in black tie and the one most easily got wrong. In Spectre, Daniel Craig’s Bond wears a black silk grosgrain bow tie from Tom Ford with his dinner suit, and the choice is a restrained one: no pattern, just a grosgrain cloth that sits against the collar and stays out of the way. The Tom Ford bow tie from Spectre is, in our view, the right one for a man who wants his evening wear to look settled rather than staged.
In the film
Bond wears the tie with the Tom Ford dinner suit in Spectre (2015). It was one of four black silk grosgrain bow ties from the costume department. We have not found which scene each tie appeared in, so we will not guess.
The details
Grosgrain. The ribbed texture gives a bow tie depth without shine. Under evening light it reads dark and quietly textured, where satin would catch the light.
Silk, in black. The film ties are described as black silk grosgrain. Tom Ford’s current grosgrain bow tie (reference SRL002-SPS04) is made from 100% mulberry silk in Italy, in black and one size, but we have not confirmed that it is the same model as the film ties.
Finding one
The film ties are out of production and out of reach: a signed one from the Spectre costume department was sold at auction in 2017. Tom Ford bow ties of this kind can turn up second-hand, so the button on this page runs a search on eBay. Look for black silk grosgrain, check the condition of the ribbing, and ask the seller whether it is pre-tied or self-tie before you buy.
Wearing it now
Wear it with a single-breasted dinner jacket in midnight or black, a white evening shirt with a turndown collar, and plain black oxfords. Keep everything else quiet. We would match the tie to the jacket’s facings rather than set it against them.
We would choose grosgrain over satin for most evenings. It suits the widest range of occasions, from a black-tie dinner to a wedding after six.
In the same spirit
For something current, the catalogue has the Turnbull & Asser Casino Royale Shantung Silk Bow Tie, a silk bow tie from a Jermyn Street shirtmaker. It is an alternative in the spirit of the Spectre tie, not the tie worn in the film.

Questions
Does Bond wear a Tom Ford bow tie in Spectre?
Yes. Bond wears a Tom Ford black silk grosgrain bow tie with his dinner suit in Spectre. The costume department supplied four of them.
Can you buy the Spectre bow tie?
Not new. The film ties were costume pieces, one of which was sold at auction in 2017. Similar Tom Ford ties appear second-hand.
Should a bow tie be silk grosgrain or satin?
Grosgrain is the safer choice. It reads as dark and understated, with texture in place of shine. Satin suits a man who wants a little more sheen at the throat.
