The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Turnbull & Asser Casino Royale Shantung Silk Bow Tie (Casino Royale)

A slim black bow tie in Shantung silk, made in the United Kingdom by Turnbull & Asser. Daniel Craig’s Bond wears it with his dinner suit in the casino scenes of Casino Royale; the naturally slubbed weave is what sets it apart from a plain satin tie.

Daniel Craig’s Bond sits down at the poker table in a dinner suit, a white shirt and a black bow tie that asks for no attention at all. Turnbull & Asser supplied that tie for Casino Royale, and the house now sells the Casino Royale bow tie in black Shantung silk: slimmer than its regular bow ties, with a woven texture where most formal ties are smooth.

In the film

Bond wears the black silk bow tie with his dinner suit through the poker scenes of Casino Royale (2006). Turnbull & Asser also points to the shower scene. The maker says the tie it sells today has been refined to sit closer to the one on screen, so we would call it a close interpretation rather than the film’s tie itself.

The details of the Casino Royale bow tie

Shantung silk. Shantung has a slightly uneven surface, with small ridges called slubs running through the weave. It remains one of the thinnest silks made, with a crisp hand and a light drape. Because the irregularity is natural, no two ties are quite identical.

A slimmer shape. Turnbull & Asser describes it as slimmer in profile than its traditional bow ties, at 2in (5cm) wide. It reads as modern and compact, never bulky at the collar.

Plain black, 100% silk. There is no pattern to compete with the shirt or the lapels. The faintly ribbed finish sits against the smoother silk of a dinner jacket facing and gives the eye a little texture.

Made in the United Kingdom. Turnbull & Asser, a Royal Warrant holder, makes it in the United Kingdom, and it comes in one size.

Wearing it now

This is a bow tie for black tie, and we would keep it there. It belongs with a white dress shirt, a single-breasted dinner jacket in black or midnight, and plain black shoes. Turnbull & Asser also sells the white shirt from the film, if you want the pairing as Bond wore it.

Why Shantung over satin? A satin bow tie matches the lapel facing and disappears. Shantung stands slightly apart from it, which suits a man who wears black tie a few times a year and wants one small detail that rewards a second look. We would choose it for that reason.

Care. Specialist dry clean only. Do not machine wash, bleach or tumble dry. Silk this fine should be stored flat or loosely hung, and never left knotted in a drawer.

If you are building an evening wardrobe, start with the dinner suit and work outward.

Questions

Is this the bow tie Bond wears in Casino Royale?

Not exactly: it is Turnbull & Asser’s interpretation of it. The house supplied the tie for the film, and says the version it sells has been refined to come closer to the one seen on screen.

What is Shantung silk?

It is a thin, crisp silk with a faintly ribbed surface formed by natural slubs in the yarn. The texture is slightly irregular, which is the point: it looks more considered than flat satin.

How much does the Casino Royale bow tie cost?

The RRP at the time of writing, October 2026, is US$295 from Turnbull & Asser.

How should I clean it?

Take it to a specialist dry cleaner. The maker advises against machine washing, bleaching and tumble drying.
