The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Massimo Alba Duster Coat RAIN2 Agades (No Time To Die)

An unlined, single-breasted duster coat in light olive green cotton needlecord, from Massimo Alba’s RAIN2 line. Daniel Craig’s Bond wears it in the Norway scenes of No Time To Die, and its soft, relaxed cut makes it one of the film’s easiest pieces to wear in real life.

Of everything Daniel Craig’s Bond wears in No Time To Die, the long green coat in Norway is the piece least like a Bond coat. It is loose, unlined and cut in soft needlecord, with nothing sharp or military about it, which is exactly why it works. The Massimo Alba duster coat is sold as the RAIN2, and in our view it is the most useful piece of clothing in the film for a man who does not wear suits every day.

In the film

Bond wears the coat through the Norway sequence of No Time To Die, most often over a white Henley, with needlecord trousers and brown suede boots. It also appears in the scene with the Toyota Land Cruiser and the helicopter. Costume designer Suttirat Anne Larlab has said it began as a left-field piece in a fitting that Craig liked, and became the coat Bond simply grabs once the scene was written. The RAIN2 in Agades is the same model. As with any film costume, small details such as the button arrangement may differ from the coat used on screen.

The details of the Massimo Alba duster coat

Needlecord. The coat is 100% cotton, cut in fine needlecord that Massimo Alba also calls baby corduroy. The ribbing is narrow enough to read as a soft texture rather than a pattern, and the cotton drapes where heavier cloth would stand away from the body.

Unlined. With no lining, the coat is a light layer, not a winter overcoat. It also hangs freely, which is where much of the relaxed look comes from.

The cut. It is single-breasted with classic lapels, a three-button fastening and slanting pockets. The cuffs are belted, and there is a single vent at the back. Inside are two further pockets.

The colour. Massimo Alba calls it Agades, a light olive green. The maker cuts the coat in other colours too, but this is the one on screen.

Made in Italy. Massimo Alba is known for soft, slightly undone tailoring, and this coat carries that approach into outerwear. The maker says it uses the smallest tags in the world, in the same colour as the thread.

Wearing it now

Treat this as a smart-casual coat for the country or a weekend away. Green needlecord sits naturally with navy or grey knitwear, a white or ecru shirt, chinos or cord trousers, and dark suede boots. We would wear it open and unbuttoned, collar down, and keep everything underneath simple. We would not wear it over a suit: the cloth is too soft and the shoulder too relaxed to sit above tailoring.

Weather. The maker does not describe it as waterproof, and despite the RAIN2 name we would treat it as a coat for dry days. It suits spring and autumn, and in colder weather a thick knit underneath will do the work the lining does not.

Sizing. The cut is relaxed, and Massimo Alba advises taking one size smaller than you normally would. The listed range runs from 44 to 60. If you are between sizes, go down.

Care. Needlecord creases easily, so hang the coat on a proper hanger rather than a hook. The maker’s instructions are clear: dry clean only, no washing, no bleaching, no tumble drying, and a cool iron if needed.
