The most carefully dressed scene in Skyfall is also the one with the least clothing in it. Severine’s robe, worn on the yacht, is by the Belgian lingerie house Carine Gilson: a cream silk-satin wrap trimmed with black lace. The Carine Gilson Égérie robe is out of production and found second-hand, but it shows what the house does best, and a sister piece is within reach.
In the film
Bérénice Marlohe’s Severine wears the Égérie robe on the Pruva Regina yacht. It is a cream, sheer silk-satin robe with scalloped black Chantilly lace at the edges, a V-neck, long sleeves and a belt. In the Summer 2011 collection it was number 12.
The details of the Égérie robe
Silk from Lyon. The silk is reported to come from a mill in Lyon, the same one that supplies Hermès. It is a fine, light satin with a slight transparency.
Chantilly lace. The lace is Chantilly, black and scalloped, and it frames the neck, cuffs and hem against the cream silk. The contrast is the whole design.
A long cut. It is a full-length wrap with long sleeves and a tie belt, built to be worn loosely and closed at the waist.
Handmade. The house describes its lingerie as handcrafted, using fine Lyon silk and lace from Caudry.
Owning it now
This is a gift as much as a purchase. A silk robe is an item to buy for the person who will wear it first and best, in the morning or on a long weekend away. We would choose a plain colour and a restrained lace trim over anything busy, so that the robe can serve for years without dating.
Wearing it. A robe like this is for the hours at home, over silk pyjamas or nothing much at all. It should be belted loosely and worn with bare feet or soft leather slippers, never with outdoor clothes. It is a private luxury more than a fashion statement, which is how we would treat it.
Availability. The Égérie dates from 2011 and is out of production, so it is found second-hand. The button on this page runs a search for it on eBay. Carine Gilson still sells long silk robes with lace. A 2013 blog post put the Égérie itself at US$1,650 when new, and second-hand prices vary with condition.
