The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Tom Ford Windsor Three-Piece Suit, Black Herringbone (Spectre)

A black herringbone three-piece from Tom Ford’s Windsor cut, worn by Daniel Craig’s Bond at the Rome funeral and in the DB10 car chase in Spectre. Peak lapels, a waistcoat and a cloth that shows its weave only up close: formality without a single loud detail.

In Rome, Daniel Craig’s Bond wears a black three-piece with peak lapels, cut in a herringbone cloth that looks plain from across a room and shows its weave only as you come closer. The Tom Ford Windsor three-piece suit is, in our view, the right reference for a man who wants one formal suit that carries authority without a single loud detail.

In the film

Craig’s Bond wears it in the Rome sequence of Spectre (2015): the funeral, and the car chase that follows, when he drives the Aston Martin DB10 through the city. It is a different cut from the O’Connor, which Tom Ford used for four of his lounge suits in the film. The Windsor is the black one, with the herringbone cloth.

The details of the Tom Ford Windsor three-piece suit

Black herringbone. Black and near-black fabrics tend to flatten into a single dark mass. The weave breaks that up, so the suit has some depth in daylight and reads as plain black in a dim room.

Peak lapels. Peaks are usually kept for dinner jackets and double-breasted coats. On a lounge jacket they sharpen the line from shoulder to chest and make the suit read as formal before you notice why.

The Windsor cut. One retailer describes the Windsor as broad in the shoulder, with wide lapels, a suppressed waist and double vents. The result is a strong, structured silhouette.

The waistcoat. It is the point of the suit. A third piece smooths the line at the waist, covers the join between shirt and trousers, and means the jacket can come off at dinner without anything looking undone.

Wearing it now

A black three-piece is not an office suit, and we would not try to make it one. It belongs to occasions with weight: a funeral, a winter wedding, an evening at the opera, a dinner where black tie is not required but effort is. Its restraint is what makes it work in those rooms.

What to wear with it. A white shirt with a semi-cutaway or spread collar, a plain black knitted or grosgrain tie, and black Oxfords with a clean toe. Keep the pocket square white linen and the watch slim. The suit carries enough presence that every other piece should stay quiet.

Three pieces, one decision. Wear the full set for the occasions that ask for it, and the jacket and trousers alone when the room is less formal. The waistcoat is the piece to keep for the evenings that matter.

Fit. The Windsor is cut with broad shoulders and a defined waist, so try it on rather than ordering from the size chart. Expect to alter the trousers and sleeves. Rest it between wears and dry clean it only when it needs it.

Finding it. Windsor is the name of the cut, and Tom Ford has made it in many cloths. We have not found this black herringbone on sale new, and we treat it as out of production. It is found second-hand, where pre-owned suits are often well below original retail. Check the size label, and have a tailor look at the shoulders before you buy, as they are the part of a jacket that is hardest to alter.

In the same spirit

These are alternatives, not the suit Bond wears in Rome.

Questions

What suit does Bond wear in Rome in Spectre?

Daniel Craig’s Bond wears a black Tom Ford Windsor three-piece suit in a herringbone cloth with peak lapels. It appears in the Rome funeral and in the DB10 car chase.

Is the Windsor the same as the O’Connor?

No. They are different Tom Ford cuts. Four of Bond’s lounge suits in Spectre are in the O’Connor style; the Windsor is the black three-piece he wears in Rome.

Can I still buy the Tom Ford Windsor three-piece suit?

Not new, as far as we can find. The Windsor cut is a Tom Ford name, but this black herringbone is out of production and found second-hand. A pre-owned suit in good order is the realistic route.

When should you wear a black three-piece suit?

Wear it for formal occasions: funerals, winter weddings, the theatre or a dinner with a dress code. It is too formal for everyday office wear.
