Bene AL Executive Desk (Quantum of Solace)

Kai Stania’s AL Management desk for Bene, the line also listed as AL Executive, appears in the MI6 headquarters of Quantum of Solace. Visible anodised aluminium, a leather-finished drawer and an optional electronic lock make it office furniture of real restraint, and worth considering for a home study.

Bene’s AL furniture plays a supporting part at MI6 in Quantum of Solace, and the Bene AL Executive desk, which Bene now sells as AL Management, is the piece of it worth owning. It is a desk with a visible aluminium frame, a veneer top and a leather-finished drawer that can be locked. It is, in our view, office furniture that suits a home study better than most furniture made for one.

In the film

Bene’s AL furniture appears at MI6 headquarters in Quantum of Solace (2008), in the room on the other side of the glass wall from the desk of Judi Dench’s M. It plays a supporting part, and we would not claim more for it. Dealers who stock the line credit its designer, Kai Stania, with a furniture range that was featured in the film.

The details of the Bene AL Executive desk

Anodised aluminium. The frame is anodised aluminium in a natural finish or in black, and the metal is left visible rather than hidden under veneer. Bene describes the idea as lightness, clarity and reduction to the essentials. In practice that means a desk whose structure you can read at a glance.

Fifteen veneers. The top comes in Canadian maple, grey beech, bamboo, five oaks (natural, grey, amaretto, vulcano and sylt), three chestnuts, and four walnuts, among them American walnut. The choice matters, because against a cool metal frame the wood decides whether the desk feels warm or severe.

A personal drawer. It has a leather finish, a pencil tray and a plug box, and can be specified with a mechanical or an electronic lock. The sensor for the electronic lock is hidden on the underside of the aluminium frame, and a small LED shows whether it is locked. It is a sensible place for passports, a notebook and the papers you would rather not leave lying about.

A sliding leather panel. A leather panel slides forward to reveal a notebook dock or connections for power and network. The working surface stays clear, which is most of what a good desk has to do.

The plug box. Its lid is anodised aluminium and gives one-touch access to power and network, so a charger never has to sit on the top.

A record of recognition. Bene’s page shows the Red Dot Design Award 2003 and the iF design award 1999. The European Level database also lists Level 3 certification from TÜV Rheinland LGA Products, valid until 4 March 2029.

Owning it now

This is office furniture, and that is its advantage at home. It was made for working at, and it lacks the softness that can make a domestic desk feel like an afterthought. It suits a study with plain walls, a wooden floor and good daylight, ideally with one chair and very little else on the top.

Which version. We would choose the rectangular top in a dark walnut or a natural oak with the natural aluminium frame. Warm wood against pale metal is the combination that sits most easily in a private room, while the black frame leans towards the boardroom. Bene also shows a square version, which suits a smaller space.

Before you order. Bene’s page gives no price, and the line is configured to order, so measure the room first and settle the top, veneer, frame colour and drawer lock before you ask. If you want the lock, specify it at the start.

Keeping it. We would keep the veneer out of direct afternoon sun and put a mat under the keyboard if you write by hand. The aluminium should need little more than a damp cloth.

Questions

Is this the desk M uses in Quantum of Solace?

Not as far as we can confirm. Bene’s AL furniture is placed in the room on the other side of the glass wall from M’s desk, in a supporting role. We cannot say which individual piece appears on screen.

Who designed the Bene AL Executive desk?

Kai Stania designed it. Bene lists him as the designer of the AL Management line.

How much does the Bene AL Executive desk cost?

Bene does not publish a price for it. The line is configured to order, so the price depends on the top, veneer, frame colour and lock, and you will need to enquire with Bene or one of its dealers.

Is the AL Executive the same as AL Management?

Yes. Bene’s current page calls the desk AL Management, while the European Level certification database lists it as the AL Executive table, with the same description and a link to the same Bene product page.
