Daniel Craig’s Bond spends the opening chase of Casino Royale in a loose, short-sleeved printed shirt rather than a suit, and it was the first scene Craig filmed in the role. Twenty years on, Anthony Sinclair has recreated the Casino Royale Madagascar shirt with Academy Costumes, the company that made the original. It is a rare piece of Bond costume that works as a good summer shirt first and a reference second.

In the film

Bond wears it in the Madagascar sequence of Casino Royale (2006), chasing the bomb-maker Mollaka, played by Sébastien Foucan, through a construction site. The sequence was shot in the Bahamas and Prague rather than Madagascar. Lindy Hemming designed the shirt and Academy Costumes made it. The shirt sold today is a recreation, not the garment from the film.

The details of the Casino Royale Madagascar shirt

The original fabric. It is cut from the Liberty printed cotton produced for the film, a red floral over a grey stripe. The print is bold, but the clean silhouette keeps it from shouting.

A soft spear-point collar. The collar is sharp enough to look cut rather than casual, and soft enough to lie open at the neck without a tie.

Square hem, side vents. The hem is straight and finished with side vents, so the shirt sits well untucked over the waist and moves freely when you sit or reach.

Adjustable sleeve tabs. The short sleeves close with button tabs. Fasten them for a closer line on the arm, or leave them open for a looser fall.

Made in England. Academy went back to its original patterns and techniques. It is a limited edition, made to mark twenty years since Craig’s debut as Bond.

Wearing it now

The print is the point, so we would let it carry the outfit. Plain, quiet things around it work best: cream or stone linen trousers, a lightweight navy cardigan over it on a cooler evening, loafers or clean leather sandals. Anthony Sinclair also sells the Madagascar trousers, in Irish linen from John England, if you want the full outfit. We think the shirt is better with the trousers left out, which keeps it from looking like fancy dress.

It suits a coastal holiday, a long lunch outdoors or a warm evening in the city. We would wear it untucked, which is how the square hem is cut to sit. Sizing is by chest, from 38 to 46 inches, and Anthony Sinclair sells a custom size for an extra US$100. If you want the sleeves worn closer to the arm, choose the size that fits you across the chest rather than one up.

Because it is limited, check availability with the maker before you plan around it. More shirts and jackets from the films are in our clothing guide.

Questions

Is this the exact shirt Bond wears in Casino Royale?

No. It is a recreation of that shirt, not the garment from the film. Academy Costumes, who made the original, returned to its original patterns and techniques, and the shirt is cut from the original Liberty printed cotton.

Is the Madagascar shirt a limited edition?

Yes. Anthony Sinclair describes it as a limited edition made for the twentieth anniversary of Craig’s debut as Bond. Check with the maker for current availability.

How much does the Madagascar shirt cost?

The RRP at the time of writing, October 2026, is US$395 in standard sizes and US$495 for a custom size.

Does it come with the trousers?

No. The Madagascar trousers are sold separately by Anthony Sinclair. The shirt works well without them.
