Some of the best things in Bond’s world are put down on a desk and left there. In The World Is Not Enough (1999), M pours whisky into a Cumbria Crystal Windermere tumbler in her office during the pre-title sequence, and Pierce Brosnan’s Bond uses the same Windermere Double Old Fashioned in the film. It is a plain, heavy glass with a fluted cut, and Cumbria Crystal still makes it.
Using it now
The Windermere Double Old Fashioned holds 350ml, so there is room for a generous measure and a large cube. The fluted cuts are shallow and regular and keep the glass from looking fussy. We would use it for whisky over ice, or neat, and keep it for that.
The cuts are made by hand in two stages, roughing then smoothing, on a sandstone wheel, a method Cumbria Crystal says is rarely used today. The glass comes in a branded presentation box as standard from the main range, and it can be engraved, which makes it an easy gift. A second-quality version is sold cheaper in its Outlet.
For a different cut, the same maker’s Grasmere tumbler is the one Craig’s Bond uses, and the Royal Doulton Highclere tumblers are a cut-glass alternative. Both are alternatives from other films, not this glass.
