After the stairway fight in Casino Royale, Daniel Craig’s Bond pours whisky from a decanter into a heavy cut tumbler in his bathroom at the Hotel Splendide and drinks a shot. It is a brief, quiet moment. The Casino Royale whisky tumbler is Cumbria Crystal’s Grasmere Double Old Fashioned, a weighty English glass that you can still buy today.
Using the Casino Royale whisky tumbler now
The glass is hand-cut in England in a Georgian-inspired pattern, named after the Lake District village where Wordsworth lived. It holds 350ml, which is enough for a large cube and a generous measure. Cumbria Crystal also makes a smaller 8oz Old Fashioned (BT-101-GR), better suited to a neat pour. We would choose the larger one: it is the glass in the film, and it suits ice as easily as it suits a single malt.
Buy two rather than one. A pair on a tray beside a decanter does more for a home bar than any amount of equipment. Wash crystal by hand and dry it with a soft cloth. Each glass comes in a branded presentation box, so it also makes an easy gift for anyone who follows Bond on screen. Cumbria Crystal’s Outlet sells the same tumbler for less, without the box and with some variation in tolerances; the maker explains the differences on its own page.
