The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Turnbull & Asser Die Another Day Inspired Voile Dress Shirt (Die Another Day)

Turnbull & Asser’s white voile dress shirt is made in homage to the one Pierce Brosnan’s Bond wears with his tuxedo in Die Another Day. It has a finely pleated front and double cuffs, and it is cut in English cotton for evenings that call for black tie.

The shirt under Pierce Brosnan’s tuxedo in his last Bond film is a plain white one, and its interest is entirely in the front. Turnbull & Asser, the shirtmaker with the longest association with Bond, has made a Die Another Day inspired voile dress shirt in homage to it. It is the right choice if you want a black-tie shirt with a little texture rather than a starched bib.

In the film

Brosnan’s Bond wears the white voile dress shirt in Die Another Day (2002) with the Brioni tuxedo and S.T. Dupont cufflinks, for the Icarus satellite presentation. Turnbull & Asser describes its shirt as inspired by the one made for the film, with the narrow pleats of the original. It is a homage, not a replica, and we would not describe it as the exact shirt from the screen.

The details

The voile front. The front is finely pleated white cotton voile, a fine, light cloth that gives the chest texture without any stiffness.

Cut and collar. The shirt is Turnbull & Asser’s Regular Fit in 100% cotton, with the Classic T&A collar, a traditionally proportioned shape that sits well under a bow tie or a black tie.

Cuffs. Double cuffs, so it needs cufflinks. The cuff finish is listed as three-button. Made in the United Kingdom.

Wearing it now

This is a shirt for a proper black-tie evening, with a midnight or black dinner suit, a black bow tie and a pair of plain cufflinks. The voile does the decorating, so we would keep everything else quiet: no pocket handkerchief with a pattern, no studs with stones.

It also suits a wedding or a formal dinner where the invitation says black tie. Under a good dinner jacket, the pleats read as fine texture rather than ruffle. If you wear one tuxedo shirt a year, this is a sensible one to own.

Sizing. Turnbull & Asser publishes a full size chart, from a 14 1/2 inch to a 19 inch collar. Regular Fit is not a slim cut, so take the chest and waist measurements from the chart rather than guessing.

In the same spirit

These are alternatives, not the shirt from the film. The Turnbull & Asser Casino Royale White Dress Shirt is a plainer white dress shirt from the same maker, and the Tom Ford Pleated Front Dress Shirt is another pleated-front dress shirt in white cotton.

Questions

Is this the shirt Bond wears in Die Another Day?

Not exactly. Turnbull & Asser made it in homage to the white voile shirt Pierce Brosnan’s Bond wears with his tuxedo, copying the narrow pleats but not every detail of the original.

Does it need cufflinks?

Yes. It has double cuffs, so it is worn with cufflinks.

Can it be worn with a tuxedo and a bow tie?

Yes. It is a dress shirt with a Classic T&A collar, made for evening wear, and the pleated voile front works under a dinner jacket.

Where is it made?

Turnbull & Asser lists the country of origin as the United Kingdom.
