Daniel Craig’s Bond takes his seat at the poker table in a tuxedo and a plain white shirt, and nothing about the shirt asks to be noticed. The Casino Royale white dress shirt is that piece: plain cotton, a concealed front, double cuffs and a collar of Turnbull & Asser’s own design. The Jermyn Street shirtmaker still sells it, and in our view it is the right white shirt for black tie, and a good deal else besides.
In the film
Bond wears it with his Brioni tuxedo during the poker game in Casino Royale (2006), Craig’s first film in the role. Turnbull & Asser says several shirts were supplied to the production to cope with the demands of filming, and it sells the model made for the film today. The shirt you can buy is that model, not one of the originals.
The details of the Casino Royale white dress shirt
Plain cotton poplin. The shirt is 100% cotton in a plain pattern, and the maker’s catalogue lists the cloth as a two-fold 110 poplin. Poplin is smooth and slightly crisp, with no texture to catch the light, which is what you want beside black wool and silk.
A concealed front. The buttons sit behind a placket, so the front is one uninterrupted panel of white. Under a tuxedo jacket, with a bow tie at the collar, nothing breaks the line from throat to waist.
The Casino Royale collar. Turnbull & Asser describes it as a signature Bond collar and lists the style as Casino Royale. It is the maker’s own design for the film rather than a stock collar, which is what separates this from any other plain white shirt.
Double cuffs. The cuffs fold back and fasten with cufflinks, so the shirt dresses up as soon as you add a pair. Choose plain links in silver or gold tone; anything with a design starts to compete.
Regular fit, made in the United Kingdom. It comes in collar sizes from 14.5 to 19, and the finished sleeve length rises with the collar size, from 64.1cm to 67.3cm on the maker’s chart.
Wearing it now
Start with what it was made for. Under a tuxedo, with a black bow tie, plain white poplin is exactly right. Turnbull & Asser sells a Casino Royale Shantung Silk Bow Tie as a separate piece, so the pairing is easy to complete.
Then wear it more often than black tie allows. We would put it under a navy or charcoal suit with a dark tie, cuffs showing a centimetre or so beyond the sleeve. Double cuffs make it a dressier shirt than a button cuff, so it suits dinners, weddings and evenings at the table better than a casual Friday.
Sizing. It is a regular fit, so check the maker’s size chart against a shirt of yours that fits well, and look at the sleeve length as well as the collar. Poplin creases, so press it before an evening out.
Care. The maker advises a machine wash at 30 or 40 degrees, no bleach, no tumble drying and a medium iron, or dry cleaning if you prefer.
