Franz Oberhauser’s futuristic lair in the Moroccan desert, in Spectre, is furnished with Interstuhl chairs, and among them is a stool from the KINETICis5 range. It is a design that suits a study, a kitchen or a home bar as well as an office or a film set. The Interstuhl KINETICis5 is, in our view, a rare Bond-connected object: one that asks nothing of the room around it.
In the film
The KINETICis5 appears in Spectre (2015), in the lair of Franz Oberhauser, played by Christoph Waltz. The film comes from the run of Daniel Craig’s Bond, but the stool is part of the villain’s set, not Bond’s. Interstuhl itself said the range would be visible in one of the film’s main scenes, and its MOVYis3 chairs appear in the same set. Secondary sources describe the stool on screen as having a white seat; we have not confirmed the exact variant with Interstuhl.
The details of the Interstuhl KINETICis5
Designed by Phoenix Design. The German studio’s clients include Lamy and Hansgrohe, and the same discipline shows here: a simple form, with nothing added for effect. Interstuhl describes the stool as something that enhances a room without dominating it, which is the right brief for a piece you will walk past every day.
Aluminium and a choice of seat. The metal parts are aluminium, and the seat can be made in wood, fabric, leather or integral foam (PU). The fabric range is long, and includes a semi-aniline leather. In practice that means the same stool can be quiet and dark in one room and pale in another.
Built for standing and perching. The bar stool, model 710K, has a footrest and a height-adjustable seat. There is also a standing rest (700K) and a set of high tables, so a counter, a desk and a place to stop for a conversation can all be furnished from one family.
Recognised, and guaranteed. The range carries a 2013 Red Dot award and a special mention at the 2014 German Design Award. Interstuhl backs it with a ten-year warranty, and lists Blue Angel and BIFMA e3 Platinum certifications for the range.
Using it now
This is the piece for a man who wants a Bond connection that nobody else in the room will notice. A pair at a kitchen island, one at the end of a long desk, or a single stool beside a drinks cabinet will all do. It is a perching seat, quick to sit on and quick to leave, so we would not choose it as the main chair for a long working day.
Which seat? We would choose leather in a study and a plain, tightly woven fabric in a kitchen. If the film is what draws you, ask Interstuhl about a white seat and about which stool matches the one on screen. Do not assume the 710K bar stool is that exact model.
Buying it. Interstuhl’s international page for the bar stool has an enquiry form and a dealer search, and shows no retail price. Expect to specify the seat material before you order, and ask about availability.

Questions
Which Interstuhl chair is in Spectre?
The KINETICis5 stool, which appears in Franz Oberhauser’s lair alongside Interstuhl’s MOVYis3 chairs. Secondary sources describe a white-seated 705K, but we have not confirmed the exact model with Interstuhl.
Who designed the KINETICis5?
Phoenix Design, the German studio that also works with Lamy, Hansgrohe and Audi. Interstuhl makes it.
Can you use the KINETICis5 at home?
Yes. Although it is an office range, its description lists private homes among its settings, alongside lounges, cafeterias and trade fairs. A kitchen counter or home bar suits the bar stool best.
How much does the Interstuhl KINETICis5 cost?
Interstuhl does not show a retail price on its model page. The cost will depend on the seat material and model, so ask Interstuhl or a dealer for a quote.
