The chair Madeleine Swann sits on while she watches Daniel Craig’s Bond being tortured is a pale, softly moulded conference chair in Franz Oberhauser’s lair. It is the Interstuhl MOVYis3 chair, in the 16M0 conference version, and in our view it belongs in a study rather than a villain’s headquarters.
In the film
In Spectre (2015), Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux) sits on a white MOVYis3 16M0 conference swivel chair in Oberhauser’s lair as Bond is tortured. Other Interstuhl seating, including the KINETICis5, can also be seen in the lair. We have not verified every detail of the film chair’s finish, so we treat the chair sold today as the same model rather than an exact copy.
The details of the Interstuhl MOVYis3 chair
A single-mould shape. Andreas Krob and Joachim Brüske drew the MOVYis3 so that seat, armrests and backrest run into one another, as if cast from a single mould. The result looks light and almost transparent, which is why it reads as sculpture rather than office equipment.
A mechanism that follows you. The family is built around a synchronous mechanism that Interstuhl calls Body Float. The seat glides back and down without the front edge lifting, while the lower backrest moves to meet the lumbar spine. In practice the chair keeps moving as you do, rather than asking you to hold one position.
Adjustment where it matters. Interstuhl describes the armrests across the family as adjustable in height, width and depth, and able to swivel. Seat depth, seat inclination and lumbar support are available as options. Check exactly what your 16M0 specification includes before you order.
Made with recycling in mind. Interstuhl quotes a recycling rate of 98.5 per cent for the MOVYis3 and uses recycled materials wherever it can. A German retailer’s listing also quotes a ten-year manufacturer’s warranty; confirm the terms with whoever you buy from.
Living with it now
The 16M0 is a conference chair on a star base with castors, which makes it a good fit for places where a desk chair would be wrong: the end of a long dining table, a library table, a study where you read more than you type. It is a considered choice if you want one shaped, pale object in a room of wood and leather.
Which version. If your dealer can supply it in white, we would choose white, which matches the chair Madeleine sits on. Colour and upholstery options vary by dealer, so confirm the finish before you order.
What it sits with. Oak, walnut, travertine and plain linen. Keep the surroundings quiet and let the shell do the talking. Anything busy beside it will undo the effect.
