Judi Dench’s M keeps one behind her desk in Quantum of Solace (2008), the second film for Daniel Craig’s Bond. It is the Louis Poulsen PH 4/3 table lamp: three stacked shades on a chrome stem, drawn by Poul Henningsen to put light where it is needed and keep it out of your eyes. Louis Poulsen introduced it in its current form in 1966.
Using the Louis Poulsen PH 4/3 table lamp now
It is a substantial lamp, 17.7in across and 21.6in tall, so it wants a desk, sideboard or console with room around it rather than a bedside table. We would put it where M did: behind the desk, so the light falls downwards on the work and the room stays free of glare. The shades are painted white to give a diffuse light, so choose a warm-white bulb and let them do their job.
At 11.6lbs, with a chrome-plated spun brass base, it carries real weight for a table lamp. More pieces for the same kind of room are in Home & Interiors.
