The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Schott N.Y.C. 140 Leather Naval Peacoat (The World Is Not Enough)

The black cowhide naval peacoat that Robert Carlyle’s Renard appears to wear through The World Is Not Enough. Schott still makes the 140 in the USA, from US$1,095, which makes it one of the more attainable pieces from the film and a coat you can buy new today.

The Schott N.Y.C. 140 is a peacoat made in leather, and it is the coat worn by Renard, the villain of The World Is Not Enough. It is a black cowhide Schott leather peacoat with anchor buttons, in the long naval cut, and it is still in Schott’s range today.

In the film

Renard, played by Robert Carlyle, wears the coat throughout The World Is Not Enough (1999): emerging from the rock in the Devil’s Breath scene, at Maiden’s Tower in Istanbul, and boarding the submarine. Reference sites say he “seems to wear” the 140, so we describe it as the coat identified with the character rather than a confirmed wardrobe credit. It is not Bond’s coat, though Pierce Brosnan’s Bond is the man it stands against.

The details

The cut. A 32in naval-style peacoat, double-breasted, long and midweight, in black cowhide.

The buttons. The 140 has metal buttons in the US military anchor style, with black hardware.

The leather. Chrome-tanned cowhide with a naked finish, and a quilted lining. Schott makes it in the USA.

Wearing it now

A leather peacoat is a winter coat that does not look like a leather jacket, which is its virtue. Wear it open over a grey roll neck and dark trousers, or buttoned up against the cold over a jersey and denim. It is serious, not smart; we would not wear it over a suit. The black reads as severe on a villain and rather sensible on a commuter.

Fit. Schott lists sizes 32 to 54, with long and big versions in black only. Use the maker’s fit guide and try the coat over the layers you plan to wear under it.

In the same spirit

For a wool take on the same idea, the Billy Reid Bond Peacoat in Navy is a naval coat in a different material. It is an alternative, not a coat from this film.
