The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Tom Ford Harrington Jacket in Navy (Quantum of Solace)

Tom Ford’s navy cotton-twill Harrington is the jacket Daniel Craig’s Bond wears through Bolivia in Quantum of Solace. It has a cadet collar, horn buttons and leather zip pulls, and the film jacket was never sold, so it remains the benchmark for Bond off duty.

Daniel Craig’s Bond has one great casual jacket, and it is not one you can buy. In Bolivia in Quantum of Solace he trades his suits for a navy Harrington, a polo and indigo jeans, and the Tom Ford Harrington jacket holds the look together. It is dark and plain, with a cadet collar and a tabbed waist. Nothing on it asks to be noticed.

In the film

Bond wears the navy Harrington in the Bolivian chapters of Quantum of Solace (2008). As best we can tell, it appears when he meets Felix in the bar and in the escape that follows, and it stays on for the attack on the desert hotel with Camille. Sources describe the scenes slightly differently. It is worth seeing in the film itself, where the whole outfit is worn with complete ease.

The details of the Tom Ford Harrington jacket

Navy cotton twill. A midnight blue that is less formal than black and dark enough to go with almost everything, with a faint sheen to the weave. The cloth is light enough to wear across several seasons.

The Harrington cut. The cadet collar and the button tabs at the waist borrow from the Baracuta G4 and G9, which gives the jacket a settled, familiar look.

Horn buttons, leather pulls. Horn buttons close the pockets, waist tabs, cuffs and collar, and carry the maker’s name on the reverse. The double zip has black leather pulls in a trapezoid shape, marked with the TF logo. These are the details of a suit, applied to a jacket.

Light inside. It is lined only through the shoulders and sleeves, with three interior pockets for phone, wallet and more. It is built to be worn, not kept for best.

These details come from a detailed published review of a Tom Ford recreation made for a fan project. We have not handled the jacket ourselves.

Wearing it now

We would wear it as Bond does, as the one dark layer in an otherwise quiet outfit: a navy knit or polo, indigo denim, brown suede boots. Blue on blue is a deliberate choice, and it works because every piece stays close in tone. It also sits well over a plain shirt and tailored trousers when the weekend runs into dinner.

Can you buy it? Not in this form. The film jacket was never released commercially, and Tom Ford’s current Harringtons are different jackets in different cloths. Our advice is to look for a navy cotton Harrington with a cadet collar and horn or horn-look buttons, cut close and without a full lining. Magnoli Clothiers makes one in the spirit of the film jacket in lightweight cotton twill. It is a less costly route to the same look. Our button runs an eBay search for a navy Tom Ford Harrington, the nearest equivalent we can search for.

Questions

Is the Tom Ford Harrington from Quantum of Solace available to buy?

No. The jacket was never released commercially. Tom Ford sells other Harringtons, but they are different designs in different fabrics.

What colour is the Harrington in Quantum of Solace?

Navy, a dark midnight blue. It is cotton twill with a slight sheen, and it is less formal than black.

What does Bond wear with the Harrington?

A navy polo, indigo jeans, a Prada belt and brown suede Church’s chukka boots. The full outfit stays within a narrow range of blue and brown.

What is a good alternative?

Look for a navy cotton Harrington with a cadet collar, button waist tabs and a light or partial lining. It should be cut close to the body, without a bomber’s bulk.
