The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Tom Ford Knitted Sleeve Quilted Bomber Jacket (Spectre)

A Tom Ford bomber made in Italy, with down-filled quilted front panels and wool knitted sleeves. Daniel Craig’s Bond wears it through the Austria scenes of Spectre, from the Höffler Klinik to the Sölden chase. It is out of production and now found second-hand.

The Tom Ford Spectre bomber jacket is cold-weather clothing built to be worn rather than looked at. It pairs down-filled quilted front panels with wool knitted sleeves and reverse, so the warmth sits across the chest and the sleeves move like a jumper. It is a quiet, practical piece, and in our view one of the most wearable things Daniel Craig’s Bond has had on his back.

In the film

Bond wears it in the Austria sequence of Spectre (2015). He arrives at the Höffler Klinik in it, meets Madeleine Swann, and keeps it on through the plane and car chase around Sölden. Underneath is a Lapis Blue mock turtle neck by N.Peal, worn with Tom Ford stirrup trousers. More on the wardrobe is in our Spectre guide.

The details of the Tom Ford Spectre bomber jacket

Quilted down front. The front panels are down-filled and quilted in closely spaced horizontal baffles. That puts the insulation across the chest and body, where a jacket this trim needs it.

Wool knitted sleeves and reverse. Knit on the sleeves and back keeps the jacket from looking like a ski shell. It also gives you freedom of movement and lets the jacket drape rather than stand off the body.

Made in Italy. Tom Ford made the jacket in Italy, and the cut is trim.

A restrained palette. On screen the jacket reads as dark navy at the front against grey knit, with silver zips. Tom Ford brought it back in blue in 2017.

Wearing it now

This is a jacket for cold, dry days when a coat would be too much: a winter walk, a drive to the airport, a weekend in the mountains. Keep what is underneath simple. A fine-gauge mock neck in a deep blue is the obvious choice, and the right one. Add dark flannel or moleskin trousers and leather boots, and you are dressed for the weather without announcing the film.

Fit. The cut is trim, so layer thin: one fine knit and nothing bulky. If you are between sizes, try it with your usual jumper under it before deciding.

Finding one. The jacket is out of production. It sold out quickly in 2015 and again after its 2017 return, so it is now a second-hand search, and our button runs an eBay search for it. Sources differ on the colourways that were made, so compare listing photographs with the film before you commit. Buy only from a seller who can show clear photographs of labels and construction. If you would rather not chase it, a navy quilted-front jacket with grey knit sleeves is a less costly route to the same look, in the spirit of the film rather than a copy of it. Tom Ford’s current outerwear is worth a look for related pieces. More wardrobe ideas are in our clothing collection.

Questions

Is this the jacket Bond wears in Spectre?

Yes. Bond wears the Tom Ford knitted sleeve bomber in the Austria scenes of Spectre, from his arrival at the Höffler Klinik to the plane and car chase around Sölden.

Can you still buy the Tom Ford Spectre bomber jacket new?

Not new. It is out of production, which is why our button searches eBay. It sold out in 2015, returned in blue in 2017 and sold out again. Mr Porter’s later Tom Ford quilted jacket is a similar but different style.

What is it made from?

Down-filled quilted panels on the front, with wool knitted sleeves and reverse. It was made in Italy.

What can I wear instead?

Look for a navy insulated front with grey wool-knit sleeves and collar, silver zips and a trim fit. That is the shape that matters, and several makers produce it at lower prices.
