The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Cutler and Gross 0425 Brown Stripe Sunglasses (Quantum of Solace)

Worn by Dominic Greene in Haiti, the Cutler and Gross 0425 in Brown Stripe is a plain rectangular frame. The colourway is no longer made, but the shape survives in a redesigned buffalo horn version, for the man who prefers his statements understated.

Daniel Craig’s Bond is not short of well-dressed adversaries, and Dominic Greene is no exception. His sunglasses are neither gadget nor disguise: a plain rectangular frame with a brown stripe, the kind of thing a man buys because he likes it. The Cutler and Gross 0425 sunglasses are British eyewear of a particular kind, confident without being loud. The original colourway is gone, but the shape has outlived it.

In the film

Greene, played by Mathieu Amalric, wears the 0425 in Brown Stripe in Quantum of Solace (2008). They appear in Haiti, in the scene where he meets General Medrano. When the film came out, the frames were reported to be selling quickly at the Cutler and Gross flagship in Knightsbridge, London, at £249.

The details of the Cutler and Gross 0425 sunglasses

The shape. A clean rectangle with no ornament. It is the proportion that does the work. Cutler and Gross now treats the 0425 as an archive design, and has returned to it more than once.

The Brown Stripe is finished. The colourway Greene wears is no longer made. That is the honest starting point for anyone searching for them: you are looking for a pre-owned pair or for a close relative, and the button on this page is an eBay search for the Brown Stripe.

The current 0425. Cutler and Gross has reworked the frame in buffalo horn, handcrafted in Germany, with larger lenses than the original. It has 5-barrel hinges, curved temple tips and 100% UVA and UVB lenses, and it comes with a horn balm for care. It is sold as a highly limited edition, in Toasted Brown. It is not the film frame, but it is the same idea in a more serious material.

The Dagger. The maker also credits the archived 0425 as the starting point for the Great Frog Dagger, a rectangle in thicker 9mm acetate with larger lenses and sterling silver dagger frontals on the temples. It is handcrafted in Italy and noticeably louder.

Wearing it now

This is a frame for the man who wants a villain’s sense of ease without the villain’s circumstances. A rectangle in a warm brown sits well with open-collar shirts, linen jackets and a day on a terrace. It is equally good with a navy suit in summer, where it softens the tailoring rather than competing with it.

Which one to choose. If you want the shape in a considered form, we would choose the horn 0425. It is quiet, and it is the nearest the maker currently sells to the original frame. The Dagger is a different mood and costs far less (US$750 RRP at the time of writing, October 2026), but it is a statement, which is not what the original ever was. If only the Brown Stripe will do, a pre-owned pair is the route; ask for clear photographs of the hinges and lenses, and for a seller who will take returns.

Fit. The horn 0425 is sold as a medium, with a 141mm frame width, a 50mm lens and a 19mm bridge. Cutler and Gross suggests it for round, oval, square and heart-shaped faces. Try it on if you can; the maker has stores and stockists for exactly that.
