The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Barton Perreira Courtier Sunglasses (No Time To Die)

The Barton Perreira Courtier is a modern aviator in titanium and acetate, with a slim brow bar and Japanese construction. Billy Magnussen’s Logan Ash wears the regular model in the Jamaica scenes of No Time To Die, and it remains an easy, restrained alternative to a classic pilot’s frame.

Not every pair of sunglasses in a Bond film belongs to Bond. The Barton Perreira Courtier sunglasses were worn by Billy Magnussen’s Logan Ash in No Time To Die: a modern aviator in titanium and acetate with a slim brow bar, made in Japan. It does what good sunglasses should, framing the face and then staying out of the way. In our view it is an easier everyday aviator than the classic pilot’s shape, with a slimmer brow bar and less weight across the top of the face.

In the film

Magnussen’s Logan Ash wears the Courtier in the Jamaica scenes of No Time To Die. The model is confirmed by a selfie Magnussen posted on Jeffrey Wright’s Instagram page. It is the regular Courtier rather than the 007 Edition. Daniel Craig’s Bond wears two other Barton Perreira frames in the same film, the Joe and the Norton, chosen by costume designer Suttirat Anne Larlarb. You can read more about the film on our No Time To Die page.

The details of the Barton Perreira Courtier sunglasses

A modern aviator. The silhouette is aviator, but the brow bar is slim, so the frame sits less heavily across the top of the face than a classic pilot’s shape.

Titanium and acetate. Saks Fifth Avenue lists the Courtier as titanium and acetate, and The Eye Man describes it as a combination frame. It is made in Japan.

Two sizes. The regular Courtier comes in 52mm and 55mm. The Eye Man lists the wide size as 55-19: a 55mm eye size with a 19mm bridge.

The colourway. The pair associated with the film is Matte Dusk / Pewter / Smolder (AR), a dark, matte front with pewter-toned metal and no gold. Barton Perreira also makes the Courtier in Matte Black, Matte Absinthe, Havana, Champagne and several other colourways.

Lenses. Saks Fifth Avenue lists gradient lenses and 100% UV protection on the model. The Eye Man also fits prescription lenses, which matters if you wear glasses every day. Its price varies with the prescription and lens, and prescription lenses take one to two weeks.

The 007 Edition. Since 2020 Barton Perreira has also made a branded 007 Edition of the Courtier, with 007 inscribed on the temples and supplied with a 007 case and cleaning cloth. It is currently very hard to find, while the regular version, the one Magnussen wore, is still available.

Wearing it now

The Courtier is a holiday frame that works well at home. It belongs with linen shirts open at the collar, navy knitwear, cotton chinos and a good pair of loafers, and it looks as natural on a terrace as on a train platform in November. A dark, slim-browed aviator also sits well against a grey flannel suit, where a heavier pilot’s frame can look as if it is trying too hard.

Which colour. We would choose Matte Dusk for the film, or Matte Black if you want something quieter still. The gold-trimmed colourways are warmer, and look best against a tan or a white collar.

Which size. The 52mm suits narrower faces and the 55mm suits wider ones. If you are between the two, try both before you buy, as the proportion of an aviator is a matter of the face rather than the number.

Regular or 007 Edition. We would buy the regular Courtier. It is the pair from the film and it is far easier to find. If you want the branded case and cloth, the 007 Edition is worth seeking out, but expect to look for it.
