Daniel Craig’s Bond wears two pairs of Persols in Casino Royale. The first are metal and sharp. The second, the Persol 2720 sunglasses in tortoiseshell with green lenses, are warmer and more lived-in, and in our view the better pair to own: easier on the face, easier with ordinary clothes, and not much interested in being noticed.
In the film
In Casino Royale (2006), Bond wears the metal-framed Persol 2244 first. In the second part of the story, after a number of adventures, he changes into the 2720 in tortoise with green lenses, colour code 24/31. He wears them with a grey melange t-shirt. The code matters, and we come back to it below.
The details of the Persol 2720 sunglasses
Tortoise and green. A Havana-pattern frame with green lenses is one of the gentler combinations in sunglasses. The brown reads as warm rather than showy, and the green is softer than grey or a mirrored finish. It is the opposite of a black frame with a mirrored lens.
Colour code 24/31. Persol numbers its colourways, and the pair in the film is 24/31. If you are buying, look for that code on the listing rather than trusting a description that says only “tortoise” or “Bond”. Other tortoise-and-green pairs exist, and they are not the same frame.
Lens choices. Across the 2720 range, the lenses come in non-polarised, polarised and photochromatic glass, in a spread of colours. Which of these a particular pair carries depends on the colour code, so check it against the listing. If you want the look of the film, match the code first and the lens type second.
Wearing it now
These are sunglasses for a man who wants to look like himself with better eyewear, not like a character. Tortoise and green belong with the quieter end of a wardrobe: a grey marl t-shirt, a navy knit, a linen shirt, a waxed or cotton jacket in olive or stone. They also work on a city street with a dark suit, where the warmth of the frame stops the whole thing looking severe.
Choose the code, then the condition. We would look for 24/31 first. Beyond that, we would rather buy one good pair than several near misses, and we would keep the original case.
Fit. Check the size marked on the frame against a pair you already own and like, and try a pair on before buying if you can.
Finding a pair. We could not find the 2720 in this colour on sale new, and we treat it as out of production; it is found second-hand. Pairs circulate widely and prices vary enormously. Be sceptical of anything priced far from the rest of the market, and ask for clear photographs of the frame and the lenses before you buy.
In the same spirit
These are alternatives, not the Persols Bond wears. Both are worn by Bond or his allies in other films.
- Tom Ford Snowdon FT0237 Sunglasses, Havana 52N (Spectre): square Havana acetate, the nearest in frame colour.
- Ray-Ban RB3136 Caravan Sunglasses (Quantum of Solace): a metal frame with G-15 green lenses, the nearest in lens colour.

Questions
Which Persol sunglasses does Bond wear in Casino Royale?
Two. Bond wears the metal-framed Persol 2244 first, then the tortoise-framed Persol 2720 with green lenses later in the film.
What is the colour code of the Casino Royale Persol 2720?
24/31, a tortoise frame with green lenses. Check the code on any pair you are considering, as other tortoise-and-green versions are not identical.
Are the Persol 2720 sunglasses polarised?
It depends on the version. The 2720 range comes with non-polarised, polarised and photochromatic glass lenses, so confirm the lens type with the seller before buying.
Is the Persol 2720 still sold new?
Not as far as we can find. We could not find this colour on sale new, so a well-documented second-hand pair is the realistic route. Check the colour code on the frame before you buy.
