The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Tom Ford Henry Sunglasses FT0248 (Spectre)

Dark Havana acetate with a gunmetal insert and smoke lenses, the Tom Ford Henry is the pair Daniel Craig’s Bond wears in the Morocco scenes of Spectre. It is a vintage-shaped, full-rim frame made in Italy, and a quieter route into Bond’s eyewear than the usual aviator.

Sunglasses seldom get a scene to themselves, and these did not need one. The Tom Ford Henry sunglasses worn by Daniel Craig’s Bond in Morocco are a plain idea well made: dark Havana acetate, a rounded vintage shape and a thin line of gunmetal. They ask little of the face, which is why they carry over so easily into an ordinary life.

In the film

Bond wears the Henry in a Morocco sequence of Spectre (2015), as part of the brown suit outfit and again with a more casual Morocco look. The same pair appears in the trailer, in the promotional images and in the video for Sam Smith’s ‘Writing’s On The Wall’. Madeleine Swann, played by Léa Seydoux, wears Persol sunglasses in the same scene. Bond wears a second Tom Ford pair, the Snowdon, elsewhere in the film.

The pair on screen is the Henry in colour 52A. At the time of the film it was listed as the Henry Vintage Wayfarer; the maker’s page now calls it simply the Henry.

The details of the Tom Ford Henry sunglasses

Dark Havana acetate. The front and temples are shiny dark Havana acetate, a tortoiseshell that reads as deep brown rather than black. We think it kinder to the face than black, and it sits naturally with the earth colours of Bond’s Morocco wardrobe.

A gunmetal insert. A metal insert in gunmetal gives the frame a fine, slightly technical line against the acetate. The signature T sits on the temples, and the Tom Ford name is laser-etched there too: a discreet mark rather than a badge across the front.

A shape of its own. Tom Ford describes a vintage-style round frame; retailers file it as round, browline or rectangle. It is a full-rim design with a soft, slightly weightier top line. The old Vintage Wayfarer name hints at a family resemblance, though the shape is its own.

Size and fit. The listed size is 51mm lens width, 20mm bridge and 145mm temples, with a lens height of 44mm. Adjustable nose pads mean an optician can settle the frame properly on the nose, which matters more than any number on a spec sheet.

The lenses. They are smoke-coloured and non-polarised, with UV Category 3 protection. That is general-purpose sun protection, so not the lens for driving at dusk or after dark.

Made in Italy. The frame is made in Italy, and SmartBuyGlasses lists Marcolin as the manufacturer.

Wearing it now

These suit a man who dresses simply: open-collar shirts, stone and tan cotton or linen suits, navy knitwear, a field jacket. Brown acetate belongs with the same earth tones Bond wears in Morocco, and it is quiet enough to sit alongside a tailored jacket on a terrace. We would not keep them for holidays.

Choosing the colour. The Henry is made in other colours, including a black frame with green lenses (05N). For the pair from Spectre, look for colour code 52A and check it on the listing before you buy.

Prescription. Retailers can glaze the frame with prescription lenses. SmartBuyGlasses lists a range of -8.00 to +7.00 sphere and -4.00 to +4.00 cylinder, so check yours against it.

Where to buy. Prices vary considerably between retailers. We would buy from Tom Ford directly or from an authorised reseller, and compare before committing.
