The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Tom Ford Snowdon FT0237 Sunglasses, Havana 52N (Spectre)

Square Havana acetate sunglasses from Tom Ford, worn by Daniel Craig’s Bond in Rome in Spectre. The frame is thick and the lens small, a proportion that reads as quiet rather than loud, and one we think makes them the easiest pair of Bond sunglasses to wear every day.

For Sciarra’s funeral in Spectre, Daniel Craig’s Bond wears a squared frame in dark Havana acetate, with a lens small enough that the frame does the work. The Tom Ford Snowdon sunglasses are restrained, and in our view the most wearable pair from the Craig films; they remain easy to buy.

In the film

Bond wears the Snowdon through the Rome sequence of Spectre (2015), including Sciarra’s funeral. Tom Ford announced the model as Bond’s pair, and Christie’s auctioned a pair worn during the Rome filming at its February 2016 Spectre sale, listed as Havana 52N with grey lenses in size 50. Bond wears a second Tom Ford frame, the Henry, elsewhere in the film.

The details of the Tom Ford Snowdon sunglasses

A thick frame, a small lens. The lens is 50mm wide and about 39mm tall, set in a full-rim acetate frame that covers more of the face than the lens does. The proportion is what separates it from a standard wayfarer: the lens takes up less space and the frame more.

Dark Havana. Colour code 52N is a deep tortoiseshell brown rather than a bright amber. It is softer than black against the skin and more serious than a honey tortoiseshell, which suits both tailoring and weekend clothes.

Measurements. The bridge is 21mm and the temples are 145mm, with an overall frame width of about 138mm. The Snowdon is made in two sizes, 50mm and 52mm; the pair in the film is the 50.

Not a film invention. One retailer dates the design to 2012, and it is made for Tom Ford by Marcolin. It predates Spectre by three years.

Wearing it now

This is a Bond accessory that asks nothing of the rest of the wardrobe. Dark Havana sits between black and tortoiseshell, so it works with charcoal and navy tailoring, and equally with olive knitwear, a waxed jacket or a white shirt in August. It is a frame for the city and for driving rather than the beach.

Which version. We would choose the Havana 52N in size 50, the pair from the film. Tom Ford also makes the Snowdon in shiny black (05B), a harder and more formal look. Retailers list the 52N lens as green or grey-green, while Christie’s described the film pair’s lenses as grey; if the exact tint matters to you, check the listing before you buy.

Fit. A 50mm lens with a 21mm bridge is on the compact side. One retailer’s size guide places sunglass lenses up to 52mm in its small-fit category, so the 50 should suit a narrower face, and a wider one may prefer the 52mm. Try them on if you can.

Prescription. Retailers including Otticanet and SmartBuyGlasses will fit prescription lenses to this frame, which suits a man who wears glasses every day.
