The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Tom Ford Wetherby Suit (Skyfall)

The Wetherby is Tom Ford’s 1930s-inspired suit cut, named as one of two new styles Daniel Craig’s Bond wears in Skyfall. It is no longer made in ready-to-wear, but it can still be ordered made to measure, which is how we would choose it.

Tom Ford dressed Bond for Skyfall in two new suit cuts, and the Wetherby is one of them. The Tom Ford Wetherby suit takes its shape from the 1930s and is, in our view, a considered choice for a man who wants a suit with a point of view. We cannot say with certainty which suit on screen it is, so this page is about the cut and how to approach it, and the link is a second-hand search.

In the film

Tom Ford representatives told a fan that the two new suit styles Daniel Craig’s Bond wears in Skyfall are the Falconer and the Wetherby. We have not matched the Wetherby to a particular scene or colour, so we describe it as a cut Bond wears in the film rather than a single identified suit.

The details of the Wetherby cut

A 1930s outline. A retailer describes the Wetherby as a unique Tom Ford cut inspired by 1930s styles. We have not seen a technical specification from Tom Ford, so we will not guess at shoulder or lapel dimensions.

Ready-to-wear is over. The same retailer says the Wetherby is discontinued in ready-to-wear and still available through the Made to Measure programme. Listings for the cut also use the house’s Base T fit.

Sizing. Examples we have seen listed are in the US 38R, or Italian 48, size. Listings are for single pieces, so they are worth checking against your own measurements.

Wearing it now

A suit like this wants a plain white or pale blue shirt, a dark knitted or silk tie and black or dark brown shoes. Keep the rest quiet, since the cut is already making the argument. For daytime, a grey or navy version is the safe choice, and we would pick one of those before anything bolder.

Occasions. In grey or navy it works for the office, a wedding or a dinner, and with a plain tie it will not look dated in a decade. We would not wear it with a pocket square and a flower in the lapel at the same time; one touch is enough.

Made to measure or second-hand? If you want the Wetherby, made to measure is the cleanest route: you choose the cloth and the fit is yours. Second-hand examples do surface, but sizes are single and alterations are often needed. Check the seams for spare fabric before you buy. The button below runs an eBay search for the Wetherby suit. Our Clothing pages cover more, and the Skyfall page lists what else Bond wears.

In the same spirit

If you want the look and not the label, these are alternatives in the spirit of the suit, not the suit itself: the Tom Ford O’Connor in grey Prince of Wales check, a current Tom Ford cut that Daniel Craig’s Bond wears in No Time To Die.
