The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Moscot Mensch Glasses, Brown Ash (No Time To Die)

Moscot’s Mensch is a round frame in Italian acetate, designed and prototyped in New York by Zack Moscot. Ben Whishaw’s Q wears the Brown Ash version in No Time To Die, a quiet change from the Univo frames of his earlier films.

Q’s glasses are the quietest gadget in the film. For No Time To Die, Ben Whishaw’s quartermaster trades his earlier Univo frames for a pair in brown acetate: the Moscot Mensch glasses in Brown Ash. They suit a man who dresses well without wanting it noticed, and in our view they are the most easily borrowed piece of eyewear from Daniel Craig’s Bond films.

In the film

Q wears the Mensch in No Time To Die (2021), in all his scenes: at MI6 with a shirt and navy trousers, and at home as part of his off-duty clothes. In Skyfall and Spectre he wore Univo U5 C1 glasses, so the Mensch is a change of frame. Two pairs were worn by Whishaw on screen, and one was sold by Christie’s on 5 October 2022 for £8,190, against an estimate of £3,000 to £5,000.

The details of the Moscot Mensch glasses

Italian acetate. Moscot makes the frame by hand from Italian acetate, and each frame shows its own pattern in the material. Brown Ash is the colour from the film: dark enough to sit quietly against the skin, warm enough to avoid the severity of black.

A round shape without fuss. The Mensch is a classic round frame, neither the thin wire circle of a poet nor the heavy, oversized round of a designer. Its proportions stay modest, which is the point of it.

Two dot rivets. The frame carries two dot rivets, a small detail rather than a statement.

A saddle bridge with acetate pads. The bridge is a saddle shape, which Moscot describes as comfortable, and the frame includes acetate nose pads.

A five-barrel hinge. A five-barrel hinge joins the arms to the front, and the temple tips are acetate too, in Moscot’s signature shape.

Drawn in New York. Zack Moscot, the family’s fifth generation, designed and prototyped the Mensch in New York. It is unisex.

Wearing it now

This is a frame for people who wear glasses every day, and we like it best that way. A good pair of round glasses should stop feeling like an accessory quickly. Brown Ash sits naturally with navy, grey and olive: a navy knit and open-collar shirt, an unstructured jacket, chinos, a pair of suede loafers. It also works with a dark suit, where the warm brown keeps the look from turning severe.

Which colour? We would choose Brown Ash. It is the film’s colour, and warmer than black. Retailers also list the Mensch in black and burnt tortoise, which suit a quieter or a more patterned look.

Which size? Moscot publishes a size guide on the product page, and we would use it before ordering. A round frame depends on proportion: too small and the shape reads as costume. Try more than one width if you can.

Lenses. The Mensch is an eyeglass frame, so lenses are fitted to your prescription. If you want the same look in the sun, Moscot also makes a Mensch Sun.

Questions

Are these the glasses Q wears in No Time To Die?

Yes. Q wears the Moscot Mensch in Brown Ash in the film, and Moscot itself has noted Ben Whishaw wearing the frame as Q.

What colour are Q’s glasses in No Time To Die?

Brown Ash. It is a dark, warm brown acetate, softer than black.

How do I choose the right size of Moscot Mensch?

Start with the size guide on Moscot’s product page. Because a round frame depends on proportion, try more than one width if you can.

Is there a sunglasses version?

Yes. Moscot sells the Mensch Sun, a round sunglasses frame, for when you want to wear the look outdoors.
