The world of James Bond, considered for a life well lived

Tom Ford Whyat FT0709 Sunglasses (No Time To Die)

Tom Ford’s Whyat FT0709 is a single-lens shield in shiny black acetate, worn by Lashana Lynch’s Nomi in a Jamaican bar in No Time To Die. At least one retailer now lists it as out of production, so a pair is worth finding while stock lasts.

Nomi’s first appearance in No Time To Die is brief. She crosses a Jamaican bar and passes Daniel Craig’s Bond unnoticed, and all we have to go on is a pair of black shades with coloured lights reflected in the lenses. They are the Tom Ford Whyat sunglasses, reference FT0709: a single-lens shield with a bold shape and a plain finish. In our view, that combination is what makes them worth wearing off screen.

In the film

Lashana Lynch’s Nomi wears the Whyat in No Time To Die (2021), in her first brief appearance, in Jamaica. She has the black shades on as she passes Bond unnoticed in the bar, and colourful lights reflect in the lenses. Our records point to the FT0709-01U, the version with colour lenses. The model was also made with grey lenses as the 01A.

The details of the Tom Ford Whyat sunglasses

One continuous lens. Rather than two separate lenses, a single piece of plastic runs across the face. GlassesNow lists it as 144mm wide and 47mm high, so it is wide and shallow. It covers both eyes in one sweep and gives a clean horizontal line, which is why the shape reads as graphic rather than fussy.

Shiny black acetate. The frame is full-rim acetate, cut with a pantograph rather than moulded. Acetate is lightweight and hypoallergenic, which suits a frame of this size. The temples are 140mm long, according to the GlassesNow listing.

Lens choices. The 01U has the colour lenses seen in the film. The 01A has plain grey lenses. The SmartBuyGlasses listing for the 01A gives them a Category 3 rating, which means general-purpose protection in bright sun. That category is not intended for driving at twilight or at night.

Made by Marcolin. Marcolin S.p.A. is listed as the manufacturer, and SmartBuyGlasses dates the model to 2018. It predates the film, so it was already in the range when Nomi put it on.

Wearing it now

A shield is a shape that asks for restraint everywhere else. We would keep the rest of the outfit quiet: a white or pale blue linen shirt, an unstructured navy jacket, cream trousers, loafers without socks. Nomi’s bar in Jamaica is the right frame of mind. This is a pair for harbours, terraces and long lunches in strong light, not for the office commute.

01U or 01A? If you want the pair from the film, choose the 01U. If you want the quieter option, we would choose the 01A in grey. A plain grey lens is easier to wear with more of what is already in your wardrobe, and the shape is doing enough on its own.

Fit. With a lens 144mm wide, this is not a small frame. If your face is narrow, compare the measurements with a pair you already own, and buy from a retailer with a clear returns policy. The 01A listing at SmartBuyGlasses says the frame is not suitable for prescription lenses, so check with the seller if you need them. Replacement lenses for the FT0709 are sold separately by third parties, should one be scratched.

Finding a pair. SmartBuyGlasses describes the Whyat as out of production, and Lenshop shows the 01A as not available. GlassesNow has a listing for the 01U. Buy only from a seller that guarantees authenticity.
